The 14 stories in this book are disturbing, violent, and emotionally draining. The characters are torn between patriotism and self-preservation; estrangement and a longing for recognition. Toronto, to which many of them flee, is an alien, fledgling culture too wrapped up in itself to open up its arms to outsiders.
