A lot of controversy surrounds Speke's claim to actually have been at the source of the Nile, although at the time he was honored for it. The controversy was stirred up by Sir Richard Burton, whose writings are extremely readable. Here is Speke's own fascinating account of his daily progress through Africa, encounters with and attacks from inhabitants, people he met and experiences with slavery. Loved the pix chosen to accompany this: includes contemporary, some colored, engravings and modern photos (showing several crocodiles!)
