Barb,

Which direction are you trying to go, from the Sony to the Literti, or from the literti to the Sony? Have you tried the Sony for Tablets on the Literti?

Here.

You really need to do a lot more research, and decide what you need in a device and where you want to get your books from. You can't expect one machine to take someone else's DRM'd book. That's WHY they're DRM'd, so you can't pass them around. Not even on the same bookstore, if your son has a different account than you do.

And we've shown you plenty of places to get books for the Sony that are DRM'less, both on this Forum and a ton more on Mobilreads.

Stick with DRM'less books, and in most cases you'd be fine, with the use of Calibre on both machines, depending on what eReader apps he has for his machine.

Literati works thru Kobo only.   Since I cant get a gift card for Kobo I never purchsed ebooks for it.... got him lots of Freebies.      I figured I could buy ebooks from Sony for Both the Sony & Literti since they were both epubs.   We dont read the same type of books.  & I can get sony gift cards at Best Buy.    Win-Win  NOT

Literti is 18 months old ....  thinking about selling the Sony & buying another Kindle LOL

Stop.

Before you buy any more ereaders or gift cards- stop and decide what you want before you do.

Barbara, we've watched you go through about 6 different ereaders. I forget why Amazon pissed you off. B&N pissed you off by requiring a credit card on file. The couple of ones you got at Big Lots didn't have the capability to do what you wanted them to do. Only the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet would do those but you didn't like those formats. The Ipad will but it's in the wrong price range. Now the Sony's not doing what you want.

I think you need to figure out EXACTLY what you want it to do and what you want as far as sharing files berfore doing anything further.

I agree with Nancy.

Until you know what you want, and learn more about how the different types of machines all work, you'll just in up with all the same problems you've had before.

And make sure you know what DRM is, how to tell if a book has it or not, and what machines will run which formats. It's important if you're going to be buying from book stores that lock their books into their own formats.

Either that, or only buy from places that don't have DRM'd books. Lot's of people have given you links to some really good sites. Research and see what all they offer, in what formats, and what payments they take, before deciding on a main bookstore.

Otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere.

I had 2 nooks within 20 days cause both were Broken!  They had something wrong that wouldnt let the reader work right 1st I took back to the store they couldnt get it to work either...  did an exchange!  2nd acted the same got money back.  Yes I was pissed at B&N cause they refused to close the account & remove my sons cr card information!  Took the bank to stop the card & issue him a new one.     Case closed

I went to Kindle been 100% happy but didnt like the idea I could only get ebooks from them.... Dont like Monoplies.     But I still have & use my Kindle!   IF your counting I had 2!  1st my son broke...put his knee on it opening my window....2nd current replacement Amazon sent That one will be a yr old Oct 5th!

I got 2 Litertis when they went on sale at Bed Bath & Beyond!  Sold mine after about 4 months cause the LCD screen hurt my eyes.      Son kept his its 18 months old.  I managed to get Tons of free ebooks for it BUT  most are series Cant buy the missing ones cause no stores near me sell Kobo Gift cards.    [epub]

I tried 2 different Tablets that didnt work for me   & I took them back to the stores!  BTW I wasnt the only one having problems with them, even techy folks were complaining!

I tried another the COBY  really liked it but found I wasnt using it much!  I got it for emails & checking the few forums like PBS & MR   NOT for reading!  tho I did back all my ebooks & my sons on it [well the SDCard]   My son like reading on it but he didnt use it much either......   So I swap it for the Sony T1.....

Did I miss any?   My Goal was to get an eReader for me that  would do epub & I could get ebooks for Both the Readers!    My son WONT read eink  he only will read LCD type & I cant afford Fire for him!  Besides he also complains that he wants the back light where the background is Black & Words are White!   I dont even know if the Fire does that.  Demo in stores suck!

So now even tho BOTH Literti & Sony read epub I still cant buy him ebooks .... sigh

Do you have a Paypal account?  I pay from that when I purchase from Kobo.  No foreign transaction fees from that either.

If you install Calibre on your computer and the Plugins for it, you can strip the DRM from any ebook you buy so you could read EPUBS on any ereader that'll take them.

You can set Calibre to strip DRM. They require added plug ins. I know I have made links to two sites that describe how to do it in previous threads. (I'm on the road without my bookmarks.)

I followed the links that Emily posted and set up Calibre and the plug ins. I now buy books from Amazon, convert the file to an epub and read on my Nook.

Barb, if your son is an adult with a credit card, why are you buying him anything? Let him buy his own books and ereader. You said you already had a kindle you use, so why get another? If you can't remove DRM then don't buy DRM'd books to share. Buy them for yourself because you want to read them, and not to share. You have to be realistic and not expect these machines to do things they're not programmed to do. You know how to do the research before you buy, you know how to check on how a company does business before you try to buy from them. Do the research before you buy and not afterwards. And don't buy cheap sale items and expect them to work like the expensive machines. They're usually cheap because no one wants them because they're junk. You do get what you pay for.

You can buy Kindle format ebooks from other places.  Doesn't Amazon convert other types of files to Kindle format as well?  Or Calibre will do that also.  As long as the ebooks don't have DRM.

Maybe your son could get the Calibre plugins installed for you.  You've just got to follow the instructions step by step.

Sorry you're so frustrated Barb.

Let me just echo those who have pointed to Calibre and the plug-ins to strip DRM and convert to any format you want. There are a number of tutorials on how to set Calibre up for that.

And finally.....the 10,000 pound gorilla in the room is about to speak.....the internet is full of interesting things if you just look.  Not saying you should....just saying.

Barb- maybe think about this another way.. How BIG does the reader have to be for your son??  I ask this because maybe a smart phone might work.  Now before you think -monthly contract.. my phone worked on wifi in Australia and that is ALL you need.  So a 2nd hand phone with the Nook AND Kindle app on it would fit your needs.  YOU could get books from amazon, he could read them on his smart phone.
Plus you CAN switch the text to Black background with white text, thats how I read on my phone.  I have a Droid, and you can buy used Droids rather cheap on ebay.    I can get around 8-9 hours reading on my phone.

There are also apps for other ebook places so he could access the free ebooks from there too without using any fancy confusing software.  Aldiko is an app on most Droid phones, you just find the book you want and it downloads it.

Buying a different EReader will not solve this problem.  Most places you buy from will have DRM.

Go download calibre and the add-ons to strip the DRM like everybody else has already suggested.

Seriously, Barb, you've never posted in this thread that you can't strip. I only know because I've seen people here and in the other forums try to help you do it. You can't assume that the other posters in this thread have read anything else you've written.

You still haven't said how old your son is. Isn't he an adult? (You've mentioned he had a credit card)  If so, then why worry about buying him anything? Let him buy his own eReader and books. It'll make your buying so much easier if you get what makes you happy and quit worring about everything being compatible.

Also, you haven't addressed the suggestion of letting your son try to install the Calibre plugin for you. Is this something he can help you with?

If you're not willing to re-look at the new directions for stripping and give it another try or have your son help you, that's fine. But it's not fair for you to assume that everyone is up-to-day with your situation.

We're all trying to help as best we can.

It's hard to recommend things to people with their minds already made up...  You can spend over $100 on a Sony but then claim a $75-95 smartphone (and I did say it does NOT need a contract and can be bought used) is too expensive. To me that does not make sense. And it really would fix all your son's issues.

I think you need to allow your son to buy his own things, and allow him to deal with it.  I doubt they will ever make a machine that can handle all the formats without tweeking them somehow.

My son has Zero income!  He only has a cr card cause it came with the Checking account.  The ONLY reason he has that is I have Zero Cr & this Dumb Apt complex wont take cash for rent & give reciepts...   I use to go to WalMart cash my SSD & get money orders But after a yr when we had 3 blizzards!  That didnt work!  Bank is next to the apts the Walmarts are 3 miles away & the mgr of the apts dont care if you cant get out in 3 ft of snow!

Is it easier to get the epub stripped than kindle?  How do you do that?   Never had any luck doing the kindle strip...get 1/2 way thru the instructions then all I get is errors.

Barb, it would be helpful if you would say exactly what step gave you an error. Go back to the instructions I sent you and try again, and when you get to the part where you are having trouble, send me a PM with the details.
