Divorce and Remarriage For Catholics? A Proposal For Reform of the Church's Laws on Divorce and Remarriage
Divorce and Remarriage For Catholics A Proposal For Reform of the Church's Laws on Divorce and Remarriage Author:Stephen J. Kelleher Should a sincere Catholic whose marriage has become intolerable be forced to live with that situation or face total exclusion from the Church and the sacraments? — Monsignor Stephen J. Kelleher thinks not, and drawing on his twenty-five years' experience with the Marriage Tribunal of the New York Archdiocese he speaks compassionately about the re... more »alities of marriage which the Church's traditional position fails to recognize:
No matter how good the remote and proximate preparation for marriage, no matter how well the law provides for the social and sacramental dimensions of successful marriages, the fact is that some marriages will fail. The law must deal with failure as honestly, as realistically, as justly as it does with success.
And while urging strongly that every possible step be taken tto save a marriage, he calls on the Church "to acknowledge dead marriages as non-existent, to acknowledge openly and joyfully the right of persons who have anguished through dead marriages to renew themselves in second marriage . . .receiving them neither condescendingly nor tolerantly, but welcoming them with open arms and open hearts as they enter into and live through their second marriage."« less
