Boy is the key character in this humorous little book written by Peter Mayle. This dog is based on a dog Mayle once adopted whose "uncertain origins and dubious hunting skills" made him a dog only the author and his wife could love. Boy tells his own story from amorous approaches to a female far too little to really love to cats which he abhors and chases out of his territory to chickens which are a form of "sport and nourishment."

It's a light read that can be best enjoyed by dog lovers/owners. Boy encounters all manner of experiences to neighbors with whom he runs afoul for many reasons, to a little boy whose teddy bear he chewed to pieces causing indigestion, to prancing about during his owners' dinner parties. I choose light reads like this as I work on heavier reads. Nice, short and fun. And, as I reflect in this witty read, let me share a quote from the book: To err is human. To forgive is canine."

From the engaging author of A Year in Provence, this book explores his one-time best friend - his adopted dog. Humorous, touching, and oh-how-recognizable (even to a cat-lover like me!), the anecdotes in this well written book are worth a look.

This book is absolulely adorable! The dog who wrote it is witty, intelligent, smarter than the people he lives with in many instances, and so likable.

This book was very enjoyable. I thought the dog was humorous in a knee-slapping kind of way, and I'm sure I'll be making references to this book down the road. The three chapters I liked the most were when his first owner takes him hunting, the chapter on dog/human communications, and finally the chapter in which he talks about his favorite toys and balls. Although it was a novel of fiction, I'd like to think I got a pretty good perspective on what my dog sometimes thinks about. :)

I laughed out loud. This dog has such personality. I want him to come live with me.... with all his bad habits!

The story of a stray in Provence told in his own witty, funny words.

Very acute observations of the human animal in its many forms.

Humorous quick read, told from the dog's point of view. The descriptions of Boy's relationship with the "girl next door" and his experience with the "chicken academy" are classic.

Very dry humor, but still amusing. it's a pretty quick read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book written from the point of view of Boy, a dog who's not short on personality. He belongs to the author of A Year in Provence, so you get a good dose of British humor and Boy's thoughts about French plumbing, food, and more. A fun afternoon read. And the illustrations are RICH!

Another great book by this author with humor and fun illustrations. "Boy" has many adventures in France and advice for human and animal.

I like dogs and I like memoirs, but this humorous novel "memoir" on a dog's life straight from the dog's mouth...er, muzzle...just wasn't enough to keep up my interest. I didn't actually finish it even though there were some funny moments. I guess it just wasn't my style, but it may be yours.
