The present volume begins with the period immediately after the Revolution of 1917 and carries on to the end of the civil war in 1921, when pace was finally established. It follows the fortunes of a group of Cossacks and their women as now they fight with the Reds and now with the Whites - as they fluctuate between the intense individualism of their Cossack tradition and the socialism of the new society.
