are there any charities that PBS is involved in with regard to donating books? i know with the economy being the way it is, libraries are suffering greatly as a result.

not that I know of...I have made a donation to operationpaperback.org which sends books to the military overseas (you sign up and they send out emails with requests or you ask for a list of those that want to receive and see which of your books fit the request)

there is another similar organization that does more than just books, books for soliders (not sure on the URL)

<<libraries are suffering greatly as a result>>

As a librarian, I commend you for thinking of libraries with regard to the economy.  You're correct, most library budgets are shrinking while the cost of books, magazines and electronic services is growing.

That said, however, be sure to talk to your intended library before planning a donation to find out what they need/can accept.  Donations do cost libraries money, in terms of staff time and materials involved in evaluating, processing and shelving the donated materials, so you want to be sure it is something they want and can use.  If they aren't able to accept a donation, they can likely recommend local charities/literacy groups who can.

Cheers,

Catt

I don't think PBS directs people toward one charity or another, they want us swapping the books here. There are a few members here who buy for soldiers or libraries and ask for donations/deals. I think many of us support our libraries by either donating books that don't move well or by spending obscene amounts of money at FOL sales.
