I've been downsizing my book collection over the last couple of years, and I ended up with a lot of credits.  I thought it would be nice to donate some of them, but it seems like all the school and military donation projects have closed.  I've been checking for the last few months but new ones are never added.  I donated some credits to PBS, but I'd rather donate to a school or library if possible.  Does PBS ever add new schools, or is there any other place I can donate them?

The school and military donation programs generally open up once a year, and they take credit and money donations rather than physical books.  There are new schools, often nominated by members, each year.  But there's a Random Act of Kindness (ROAK) discussion forum where you could offer to donate them to a school or library.  That would be awesome!  Or you could check to see if there's a school in your area to save on postage.

Very generous!

You can also donate them back to PBS.

Also if you have a VA hospital in your area they're more than happy to accept books.  Just call their RECREATION Department.  Good luck. Pat

I think Karen is talking about what to do with her extra credits and not actual physical books. Karen, you may have to wait as Patty said the military and school programs open only once a year. It's been a while since the military program has been here, so maybe that will open up soon.

The school program is in the Fall, before Thanksgiving.

When I had extra credits I had books sent to the Pine Ridge Reservation schools.  They maintain a list of the books the school libraries are looking for.  I just went through their lists and found books that were available here and had them sent there.

The school donations were open last fall.  Members have been expecting the military donation program to open up sometime this spring, but haven't seen it yet.  Be quick when it does, PBS members like to give so the quotas are reached quickly!

Its not too far off before they should open up again. Fall is usually when they do the credit donation programs so you just have a few more months to wait :) There is also the possibility of selling 50 credits per month and donating the cash to another cause if you have a lot of extras.

BookwormKath,

I looked at the link you gave for Pine Ridge Reservation.  What a wonderfully thoughtful thing for you to do!  Both to donate your credits/books, and to let others know so they can as well.

The military donation program has usually started up around this time, and since members are noticing their Wings donation icon disappearing recently , it looks like it will be re-appearing here at PBS soon!  Keep your eyes open -- this popular donation program starts, fills up and ends quickly!

I wish that PBS would have a thread for donations to other projects.  I work at a HS and had asked for donations once and got in trouble.  I know the programs they give to are very worthwhile, but it would be nice to have more options to donate too.  I'm guessing it would be too hard to make sure that the people asking for donations were truly using the credits/books for what they said they were.  I personally just made sure the books were sent to the HS I worked at.  Maybe someday we will have more options.  =)
