One of Rendell's earlier books, and every bit as well-written as her later ones. A seemingly plain, mild-mannered housewife is murdered. During Inspector Wexford's investigation, her secret past is discovered.

Wow, I really enjoyed this book. I have read many Ruth Rendell mysteries before and enjoyed them, but this one really is a step above. Whoever reads this next is in for a treat.
