barely made it through this book and had to skip a lot of it, I'd rate it more of harlequin type book, the story is so slow and so much description that you can skim the pages and still not miss anything, for those that like the harlequin type books this is for you but for ones that want a really suspenseful story it's just not there.

After watching her mother and sister drown Lisa grows up, becomes a lawyer and is one of three candidates in her lawfirm who are competing to be senior partner in the firm. Her bosses decide to take them all on retreat to an Alaskan lodge owned by a previous lawyer from the firm. Lisa finds herself pushed in the river and rescued by Mitch, the owner of the lodge and her previous lover. They must hike out of the wilderness if they are going to make it back to civilization and discover who tried to kill her. The book has strong characters and held my interest as the plot unfolded.

I have found a new favorite author recently and Karen Harper is exceptional and entertaining. I totally become immersed in her stories and am the characters in the book. I stay up late into the night to finish the books and this one was no exception. It keeps you guessing until the last pages. Great book!

This is a romantic / mystery / adventure novel, sort of cross-genre. You know from the start that the extranged lovers will most likely get back together again--if the woman lives that long!
The suspense lies in the mystery.
All too many people might have good reasons for the repeated attempts on Lisa's life. Could it possibly be the rich, corporate husband-and-wife team who paid so their employees could share this Alaskan adventure getaway? Is it one of her fellow lawyers wanting to increase the odds that they will get a coveted position? Is it one of the local ladies jealous of competition for the handsome resort owner? Or is it some stranger who likes killing women for the fun of it? All seem equally plausible at one time or another...

From back cover:
-Attending a corporate retreat at a remote resort in Alaska, Lisa Vaughn is plunged into the frigid rapids of the Wild River. Swept away, battered and alone, she has been left for dead.
Lodge owner Mitch Braxton knows something is terribly wrong when Lisa fails to turn up for a private meeting to clear the air and close the book on their broken engagement. Embarking on a heroic search that takes him miles downriver, he saves Lisa from the deadly water, but not before they've been swept deep into the wilderness.
-Far from civilization, the former lovers must put aside their hurt feelings and find the will to survive against nature. There's a killer on the loose and, for now, they must measure their future together in days rather than years.

This is the 2nd book that I have read of Karen Harper. Read it in two evenings. If you have ever longed to leave the corporate rat race, wished for a 2nd chance with someone you loved and lost, worked with others that would step on you just to reach the next rung in the ladder and worked for executives that you wondered just how trustworthy they really are, then you will identify with this book. I did. I liked the characters, loved how each had their own little odd ways and secrets. Don't we all. This is a good read and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Harper's books.
