I left this book on the TBR pile for almost a year, sure I'd dislike it. To my suprise, I loved it. This is the Story of Gabe and Rachel, in the beginning he's gruff and not lovable, and she is smart mouthed and fearless. Edward, Rachel's 5 year old son is also a huge part of this book. In the beginning I was sure there was no way this would turn into a love story, but it turned into one of the best. Susan Elizabeth Phillips has such a way with her characters, you actually feel you know them. And feel them grow throughout the book. There are many heart wrenching scene's that are beautifully written. With just as many hot, hot love scenes. By mid-book, you are cheering YES and crying NO at the same time till the end, there is so much push and pull. This is certianly worth reading.

I couldn't put this book down, and I say that of very few books. It is a story about redemption, about overcoming some very long odds, about proving the world wrong, and about the power of love to bring people back from the brink of despair. Rachel Stone is the disgraced widow of a corrupt televangelist trying to protect and provide for her 5 year old son, Edward. She has come back to the site of her disgrace, Salvation, North Carolina, where she is nearly universally despised, to try to find a chest she thinks holds the key to some money her despicable husband left behind. In the process, she not only rescues herself and her son, but the hero Gabe, who is brought back from the brink of fatal despair. The story is original, the dialogue is snappy, and despite what sounds like a very depressing story line, it is fundamentally upbeat. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

I loved the book but then again I like all Susan Elizabeth Phillips books. I would recommend you read Nobody's Baby But Mine before this one but it can be read as a stand alone and do just fine.

Dealing with faith, love, and loss, this book is a little bit deeper than some of SEP's other work. This one required a box of tissues for me.

Part of the series about the Chicago Stars football team. I liked this series because it had intelligent, strong, independent women.

Read "Nobody's Baby But Mine" first. This one is the second in the series about the three Bonner boys. The first one is excellent, and this one is very, very good. Easy read. Funny, and emotional.

Setting her story in Salvation, N.C., Phillips adeptly develops the theme of love's healing power. Broke and desperate to provide a better life for her son, gutsy Rachel Stone ends up in Salvation when her car breaks down. She knows the place?even worse, they know her as the widow of G. Dwayne Snopes, a televangelist who fled stealing millions. Luckily, Gabe Bonner, who owns a drive-in theater where Rachel asks for work, seems to be the only person who doesn't recognize her right off. Rachel's proud mettle distracts Gabe from the grief of his own tragic loss, but enemies strike out at Rachel, while Gabe's brothers mount a family defense against the gold-digging widow. Phillips (Heaven, Texas) digs deep to expose weaknesses and strengths in the psyche and faith of her characters. The result is a book that is touching, funny, sexy and humane.

Enjoyable, light, romantic comedy (?)... I find Ms. Phillips work quite amusing and enjoyable. I especially liked the Stars series, but I like the sports tied theme. Decent characters, even if they are somewhat predictable.
