I enjoyed this book. It seems that Lehane was just warming up for the books yet to come in this series. I had to quit reading the series because they good too gritty, too shockingly violent and graphic, and too nasty for me. This one gives a taste of what is to come, but is still bearable. Lehane has talent; he just took it in a direction that will please many--just not me.

The first in the Kenzie/Gennaro series, this book was good. I like the relationship between the main characters and the action is non-stop. However, this book gets a little too bogged down in racial tension and politics. A good story, but relied to much on shock factor. Plus, the idea of tough character Angie Gennaro being abused regularly by her husband is a little far-fetched. Otherwise, a good read for those who like PI/cop stories that are gritty and true-to-life.

Another great Dennis Lehane book: he's a master of portraying the gritty side of Boston, and his characters really come to life.

This is the first book with the characters of Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro, written by Dennis Lehane who also wrote Mystic River. This is an action packed crime story about justice, right and wrong and human suffering. A hard to put down book and I can't wait to read the other stories in this series.

This is a terrific mystery/suspense novel by the writer of Mystic River. Begins the Kenzie/Gennaro series, and I can't wait to read another after having read this one!

The competent writing and sure touch with characters that Lehane offers here eventually grew into the masterful prose and characterization of Mystic River. This earlier book, as much as I liked it, is not quite that good.

The people are remarkably well-drawn. Angie and Patrick are memorable, and others, characters that would be mere wooden background for other writers, with Lehane provide detail and breathe life and realism into the story. It's a good story, too, involving and with just the right degree of complexity. But Lehane preaches too much, paragraph after paragraph of social commentary that quickly grows annoying even as it derails the pacing of the plot. The book often seemed to drag, even though it's fairly short by today's standards.

I'll be reading more of Lehane, but don't think this is his best effort.

Great book! 1st in the Kenzie/Gennaro series. Good suspense. I liked the characters a lot. It is about sensitive subjects - racism and child molesting so some may find it offensive but I thought it was very thought-provoking.

The first book in the Kenzie/Gennaro series, this book was excellent! A little dark and gritty, but a can't-put-it-down read.

A mystery featuring private detectives isn't exactly unchartered territory. A tough detective who likes to crack wise with the help of a violent sidekick isn't exactly original either. Considering this well worn territory,it is surprisingly just how fresh and original Patrick and Angela are. A Drink Before War, like the novels to follow, stands out not for its basic premise, but for its outstanding execution. The main characters are likable. The plot is dark but a pleasure to read. What really makes Lehane stand out though, is the way in which he tackles significant moral issues. This is even more clear with later titles like Gone Baby Gone, but in this action packed opener to the series he takes a powerful look at race relations in America. If you haven't read Lehane yet I highly recommend you start here.

"A Drink Before the War" is the first of Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro detective stories. It's interesting and involving - especially in the set up of the main characters. Lehane is able to give insight into both without bogging down the story - interestingly, it all relates with each other, which makes the storyline more involving. The book deals heavily with race relations, but in an honest way - you can tell he is writing "real" characters, instead of preaching his point through them in an unrealistic way. A good read - definitely recommended.

It's an entertaining read, actually. It's well-paced and I enjoyed it even though I don't usually read crime mystery-type books.

This is both Dennis Lehane's first novel as well as the first in the Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro PI series. It's written in true noir style with gritty characters in the even grittier setting of Boston's rough neighborhoods. Lehane's writing is littered with impassioned political rhetoric and heavy-handed examinations of the racial tensions that plague my native Boston. I found myself wondering if the views are all Patrick Kenzie's or if Dennis Lehane is using his characters to express his own frustrations. In the end it doesn't matter, Lehane captures Boston perfectly.
Kenzie and Gennaro are hired by a Senator to find some âdocumentsâ allegedly stolen by the cleaning woman. The case isn't as simple as it initially sounds and Patrick and Angie are soon caught in a web of lies that connect the State House to two rival gangs. They struggle with doing right by their clients or doing the right thing, and their lives are in constant danger. They are bound to each other and the case by their experiences with domestic abuse and racial divide.
By mid-novel the characters were as comfortable for me as a pair of old sneakers, albeit with a few stuck pebbles and untied laces.
