In a terse, modal fugue, James Sallis has created Driver, a drifting, rootless character who thinks a lot but speaks mostly through silence. Nonetheless, he is unusally patient and observant enough to master several techniques which enable him to pursue a life of speed, violence and crime in strangely low key.
