This would be a great book to introduce your child to the struggle between the North and South. It makes it very clear that folks were not exactly sure what they were fighting about - - state's rights? abolishing slavery? or what? A Southern poor boy and a former slave fighting with the Yankees meet up on the battlefield and strike up a friendship. Well portrayed characters, lots of inner conflict, this is a great historical fiction book, with foreword and end notes to clarify what is fact and what is fiction. Homeschooling?
