I've been going through cooking spells off and on for, well, a long time! And I get so frustrated to find a recipe and actually narrow it down to a few and buy the stuff then cook it just ot have it be a dud..a total waste of time and money and not to mention being hungry as all get-out! and its' just me I'm cooking for...after reading through a bit of the 'what's for dinner' thread in members thoughts I got to thinking and wondeirng how many actually try out a new recipe on an entire family LOL and cross their fingers?? that's a lot of tv dinners to keep on hand in case it flops and 2 or more are hollerin' for food!

Well, earlier this year I unfortunately inflicted a big dud of a recipe on my coworkers for a potluck.  We had a taco bar, and I decided to make pork carnitas.  I researched recipes, bought all the stuff, including some expensive achiote, and cooked it the evening before the potluck (it cooks for a long time, and I couldn't do it in the middle of a work day).  On potluck day, I nuked it to warm it up, and it was just BAD.  As the pork was already shredded, it became very dry when it was reheated, and it had that gross flavor that some reheated meats have.  YUCK, and how embarrassing!  Usually everyone really likes my potluck contributions, but not that one.

Another time, we had some friends for dinner, and I tried a dessert that I had never done before.  It was supposed to be a chocolate fudge pudding cake- the recipe involved brownie mix, instant chocolate pudding mix, and the result was supposed to be a fudgy cake atop a warm pudding base.  The ACTUAL result was rubbery blobs of chocolate in a brown, watery substance.  We had ice cream for dessert instead, lol.

Needless to say, I am way more cautious about testing recipes before making them for other people!

The funny thing was that the recipe was out of a cookbook called "Betty Crocker's Quick and Easy Recipes"- and it of course turned out to be not so easy!  One of these days I will try it again and figure out where I went wrong the first time!
