Last week I received a request for a book and accepted it, printed out postage and marked it mailed, not realizing that the same book had already been requested.  I tried to look up the member, but could not find them.  I sent an email to the live help on Thursday, but have not heard back.  Is there anything I can do, short of going out and buying a new book?

the book should be on your main account page and there is a PM button that you can contact them.  it is there even if you have marked it mailed

this is why you shouldn't print postage or mark it mailed until you actually do so because anything could happen (as you found out).

I would see if you could find it at a used book store (don't know the book or title or anything).  if not, then I suggest contacting the owners of the site and explain what happened and they can cancel it for you.

Hmm.  Did the 1st request get cancelled? Or had you already sent it out?  This could be a glitch with the system. I would contact PBS. Usually postage is non-refundable but I think they will do it if it's a system glitch that caused the problem.

Thanks for both of your replies.  I'll try to contact PBS and see if they will refund the postage. I know it was totally my fault. I could swear I looked all over for how to contact the member and it was right there the whole time! I feel stupid now. Thanks again to both of you.

I don't think that I understand the situation.  When you said the book was already requested, did the same member request the same book twice?

I'm confused. Was the book requested from another site also? Or did you get two requests for the same book here due to a system glitch?

Lesson learned - always pull a book from you shelf and confirm that a) you have it and b) its postable before accepting and printing a label with postage. And then only mark a book mailed when have actually done so.

I am pretty sure you will be out the postage, that is not refundable from endicia. You will need to contact the site in order to cancel an order that's been marked mailed. Please do so quickly since you have taken this person out of their first place in line for the book until the transaction is cancelled; so not only is it not on the way like they think, but they could be missing out on another copy being posted.

you do realize there are only a couple exceptions where you can actually mark the book mailed before you actually mail it correct?

Hmm. Did you reprint the wrapper for the one you sent out?  If so then you did not repay for the postage.  They only charge you once and I believe you can reprint the wrapper even after it's been marked mailed-incase the book comes back to you or something.

Did the book post to your shelf twice?  Sometimes when posting wishlist books, PBS burps and two copies get posted and then applied to two peoples wish lists.

If that is the case, then you let the 2nd requestor know what happened and YOU cancel the order so they get put back to 1st place on the wishlist.

The book was posted twice and was requested by two different people.  I had already marked the book mailed, so I cannot cancel the second request.  I Pm'd the member yesterday explaining the situation.  I am tempted to just go buy another copy of the book, since it's one of those mass market paperbacks, and the mixup was totally my fault.  And now I know to always check my other requests and books first.
