I have a simple question. I bought a book lot on ebay and read the books. I wanted to post them, but 2 of the hard covers do not have the dust jackets with them. Does that make them unpostable, even if they're in good condition? Thanks!!

Hi Holly,

Hardcover book aren't required to have their dust jackets unless the requestor has Requestor Conditions.  Those will pop up when you get the book request.

To be polite, should I PM the member first and see if they mind?

I don't think PMing the requester is needed, since you are completely following the PBS standards when you post books without covers.

I wouldn't PM them because if they want the dust jackets for a HB that should be in their requestor conditions.  If you wanted to be nice you could send them a PM to let them know but it isn't necessary

Holly,

You don't need to send them a PM.  If they need/want the dustcovers for the books, they should have that in their requestor conditions.

I wouldn't pm them either because some people take forever to respond to pm's, and like the others have said, unless they have a condition set up asking for dustjackets, they shouldn't expect them anyway.  While I like to have them, I know that when I order a hardcover I won't necessarily get a dustjacket since I don't have condition requesting one.  It's a nice idea to pm people, but it can become complicated.

I vote against PMing them.  If the dust jacket is that important then it should be in their conditions.  Some people only come on once or twice a week and you could be stuck waiting for this person to respond. Then you have to decide to send it or cancel.  If by chance they mark it received with a problem because there is no dust jacket: you will not have to give them a credit back.  PBS will be able to see that the requestor did not have a "no dust jacket" condition when they asked for the book.

I disagree about PM'ing them.  I have several books on my wishlist that I would like with a dustjacket, but I don't have RC.  I have heard many people say that they refuse any request with RC.  I once requested two hardcover books from the same person.  They were kind enough to PM me and tell me about the lack of dust jackets.

Yes, sometimes people do take a long time to respond to PM, but you can just tell them that if they don't respond before you need to mail the book, then they willl just have to take it the way it is.
