Makes me sick!!   Folks when they say this is a Banana Republic believe it!!  I live with this shit every day of my life.  We have spent thousands of dollars on legal documents to TRY and prevent this same thing from happening to us.  There is no real guaranty.  In November they have gotten enough signatures to put a marriage (between man/women) ordinance on the ballot. Just this morning, we were talking about moving out of Miami-Dade County and going to Broward if the ordinance passes.

I finally read this article & the inhumanity of the hospital, doctors & staff is incomprehensible to me.  I can't even begin to imagine what that poor woman & their children had to go through that day.  I hope Lambda Legal gets that hospital for everything they are worth - especially the doctor that wouldn't let her see her wife & the mother of the children.

One of the things that this article really brought to reality for me is the need for carrying the legal documents with you. As a rule, this type of thing is a non-issue for us (we are legally married in Canada, where we live). We travel all the time and 99% of our vacations are to somewhere US. It had previously never occurred to us to carry our Power of Attorney or the Medical Power of Attorney with us when we travel. This article really drove home to me, how we MUST carry those documents when we travel in the US. (how many vacations we have taken in Florida, even to just board a cruise. We have the documents, just never thought to carry them on vacation with us. It definitely hasn't been part of my packing list! But it is now!!!! Colleen

Yes, Colleen it's important to travel with all your legal documents.  I have them in my purse all the time.  Sad, but true.

Wow, Colleen, I had the same thoughts.  We've been through Miami countless times.  There but for the grace of that that is holy, could go us.  <Sorry, awkward but you get my drift>

Yes it is sad but true..... What will it take for us to make sure we have our paper work in order??? Do you have all you paper work done. Do you know people who don't????? Please if you know ANYONE who might need to read this give it to them. Help them so they don't end up like this. TOO MANY of us do and we don't even know it :(

From the sounds of it, I don't think they would have honored your legal documents.  My partner have been through numerous medical situations and we have always been treated with respect.  I will keep this family in my prayers.
