Her excellent series of police procedurals features Detective Chief Inspector Reg Wexford and his associate, Mike Burden. In the earlier books, Wexford is down to earth yet intuitive and imaginative, while Burden is prudish, prissy and rigid. They have a prickly relationship, but their adventures make them both change for the better. In this one, Burden, who has gone through a major life change, is the focus of the mystery, which centers upon a second child that goes missing from the area within a short time. Recommended, though better if you read the earlier ones before this one.
