Wow - that would take a person out of the story!

Other than the OCR problems (like having all the " be replaced by R or having random periods in the middle of wo.rds) or the extra double-spacing between paragraphs, I haven't run into anything yet. In 2008 there were lots of OCR cleanup problems like that, to the point that I almost got used to it. I think they're better about proofing now which I can appreciate is a tedious process. It's been more than a year since I've returned something due to poor proofing.

That is one of the things I like about the Kindle -- 7 days to return an ebook and get a refund, no questions asked as long as you don't make a daily habit of it. I don't think the other booksellers do that.

I've also emailed authors to let them know about OCR problems and every time I've had a gracious response. They want their books to look good (well, of course they do). Several authors have sent me free ebooks of their new releases as a thank you. People are so nice.

Oh, I downloaded Sense & Sensibility free right on my Nook (so I think it was a google book) and it was so horrible I couldn't even read it. Entire words were jumbled to the point I didn't know what they might have been. There were random numbers all over, spaces between letters of words or breaking up sentences terribly. I can get past usual OCR issues, but this was so butchered it wasn't even possible to read and I didn't like picking my Nook up, knowing I was reading it. Then a second one (also free, presumably google book) was Little Women. Again, bad misspellings and random numbers, spaces, etc. Not near as bad as S&S, but still annoying enough to be too distracting for me. So, I went ahead and bought B&N's 50 book collections for the classics and it was worth the $2.99 to not deal with the horrible formatting and OCR issues with the free versions.

I did hear back from Amazon...they offered me the refund!  They also said it would be fixed in 2-5 days.

Yes I run into those mistakes with "Free" Classics!  B&N were the Worst!  Kobo had few mistakes!  Amazon was Almost prefect LOL  When Kevin downloads a classic he put it on his computer THEN Proof Reads it!  Fixes all mistakes.  Then transfers it to the SD Card LOL

Most of what I've seen have been missing paragraph breaks - which isn't too bad unless it's dialogue.  Generally that's just been on conversions from pdf, and I haven't seen it since Sony changed their format to ePub.'

OK - weird spelling thing here - PBS spell check wants me to change dialogue to dialog.  I double checked it in Word in case I'd been mistaken about the spelling (for years), but dialogue is right, and the synonyms match my definition.  No synonyms for dialog in Word though.

I read a book called Hilda: Snow White Revisted.  The author is Dutch writing in English.  The book is quite amusing, but the grammar and English mistakes are throughout the book.  He would have had a very nice parody/retelling had he taken it somewhere to clean up some of the words.  Some of the misused words were kind of funny.

There are two things that drive me crazy in eBooks: missing section breaks, and hyphenation problems.

Section breaks are used to indicate when you're changing time or location, or to another character's point of view. In a print book, they're usually either indicated by leaving extra blank space or by a printer's dingbat in the middle of the line. For some reason, both types of indicators seem to be missing in the eBooks I've read, and it takes me a couple of sentences to go "oh, we've moved to somewhere else now" and get myself reoriented.

Hyphenation problems in eBooks are usually caused by carrying over the hyphenation from the print version, so words that were split at the end of a printed line can end up hyphenated in the eBook, even when they're in the middle of a line. It took me quite a while to figure out why there were so many randomly hyphenated words in my eBooks, but I'm pretty sure now that this is the reason.

I've been reading Jean Auel's Clan Clan of the Cave Bear series, and there have been a lot of "scannos." I marked them all and reported them to Amazon.  For one book they said "yes, your problems are valid, we're working on it" and for the other one they said "yes, we know, we're working on it."  They offered me a refund but what I really want is the corrected books!

Even in the free ones. But if I do I will be sure to post them here.

Somewhere around page 200 in James Potter and the Hall of Elders I found myself back at page 50.  I hadn't bookmarked my current position and had to page through to get back where I was.

Barbara, I'm not sure if it was a duplicate or there was a glitch that sent me back to page 50.  I should reopen the book and see if I could replicate it.

I was reading Helen Hollicks Forever Queen, and through the whole text knights was spelled cnights and all the English Shires were  treated as two words Hamp Shire, Wilt Shire......

There was one recenly that  would have a word and then                                a gap like so.  The mistakes have to be pretty glaring for me to see them, I'm no grammer maven or proof reader after all.

I haven't gotten back to it, but during Christmas I was reading A Christmas Carol from Barnes and Noble and Marley's Ghost chapter was missing and then I found it after the Christmas past part.  I need to report it and see what they do.  Thanks for reminding me!

I hate the random As that pop up inside words!

Check Project Gutenberg for the freebies, so far I've found them to be very well proofed. Of course these are books that are out of copyright (think 'old') or where the author has given them permission to make available.
