For $35, you can get a library card from the Free Library of Philadelphia  http://libwww.freelibrary.org/register/getcard1.cfm

They have a very large selection of ebooks and audio books.

Shaun,

If I recall correctly, you have a Kindle, so yo'll have to wait a bit until they get the Overdrive hooked up, but in the meantime you can get ready.

http://search.overdrive.com/

( I don't know why my link isn't working but just type it in your browser instead.) When you get there, do a search by country and state and it will bring up a list of the libraries and library systems in your state that use Overdrive. You can search each of the collections and see how may and what books they have. From there you can contact the systems that have a selection you like and see what their in-state resident policies are. Many libraries will charge you to check out physical materials but will give out a digital card for free to other state residents.

If you do find the libraries in your state are charging for out of area, before you buy, check out the Free Library of Philadelphia- the gold standard for the non resident pay card. They have appox 7000 ebooks and growing at about 100 a week. They charge $35, and while there are systems that charge less, the amount of money to amount of books available to new releases ratio is pretty stout.
