Edward and the Edwardians Author:Phillippe Jullian "Of all books on this period, official or scandalous, I've enjoyed this the most. M. Jullian, who is both a historian and a novelist, evokes the people and times with scholarship presented in elegant writing, and his painter's eye made me see all the glittering uniforms, chestfuls of decorations, sweeping ball dresses through a screen of London ... more »fog or in the silver of Paris light. He is masterly at presenting the royal residences. As a Frenchman he has given Edward his due as an important influence in international politics, and his nationality gives him the added advantage of viewing Edward and his times neither with over-reverence nor with eyebrows raised in disapproval. He can see how extremely funny much of this overstuffed period was, but it is with appreciative and joyous laughter that he tells his tale. If the Monarch had ever reaqd a book I think he would have enjoyed this one."
