My husband got a present from a friend via Amazon, which he hasn't opened yet because his birthday isn't for a few weeks. I peeked at the "don't read this unless you want to know card"... and it's a KINDLE!

I'm so thrilled! I don't think my husband particularly wants a Kindle, but I sure do. ;-)

Am glad now I ordered the Kandles when they were 2 for $10! One for my sister one for me my husband.

cool!

my birthday was 10/10/10, and my mom likes to do themes, so my parents gave me a stack of $10 bills - one for every year.  which adds up!  i'm seriously considering getting myself a Kindle with part of it, but i'm still hesitant because i haven't been able to play with a new gen one yet.  the demo ones they have at Best Buy turn out to only cycle through a set demo, so you can't try out things like page turns to find out how fast they are, or mess around with things like text size settings.  at least you can go and push the buttons, even if they don't *do* anything.

I'm pretty sure this one is the latest generation, so feel free to come by and try it out. It won't be opened for two more weeks though.

I have a first generation Kindle and I love it to pieces, livesaver on long trips. It does not replace the actual book yet for me, but when it comes to convienience and all the free books out there is nothing better

LOL, Willa! I'd like to see his face when your hubby opens the package. I'm sure he'll give it to you right away, LOL!

I was feeling a little sorry for him, then remembered that when this same friend sent our son an iPod touch (incredibly generous friend!) he pretty much appropriated it for himself. ;-)

i have a kindle 1 and the page turns are fine.  I don't really understand the reason this is a concern, because I don't really need the page to turn super fast.

What I am wanting is the text to speech.  Kindle 1 doesnt have it and I havent been able to justify upgrading yet. :)

I've heard that same page turn complaint about the Sony Pocket Edition that I have.  I really don't notice it at all.  It's certainly not exceedingly slow like I've heard it described.  Doesn't bother me at all, it seem to turn the page faster than I could do it myself.

Willa, that would be great if i haven't ordered my own by then!

for me, i do wonder about page turns.  when i got to play with the Sony's at some store, the page turn was too slow for me.  i read pretty fast, and due to the screen size there's less text on the page than an average mmp page.  [and my eyes aren't good enough anymore to use a text size smaller than what i'm used to in books.]  i've heard that it doesn't take too long to get used to that flash from black on white to the reverse and back as you change pages, but i think a slow page turn would get to me.

i have to agree there are *lots* of free books out there!  i have been building up my Kindle library with free books ever since Kindle for the PC came out, and have downloaded some that were on my WL or i was considering, and various free short stories from authors i read, and just stuff that looked interesting from authors i never heard of.

after reading the paperback of Crux by Moira Rogers (enjoyable paranormal romance), i was quite happy to discover i'd already downloaded a couple of free stories of hers that i read on my computer, and then downloaded several more i found on her website for reading later.

congratulations!

I have the sony prs505 and the page turns I notice but the only things that really bug me are 1) the formatting..for some reason the ebooks don't paragraph the same and not sure if it's because i put it on large print or what..adn 2) the dang page turn buttons are in the wrong place for me..one on the right is too high up and the one on the bottom left is just a tad too far over. drives me nuts. I wantt o hold it comfortable yetI have to juggle my hands around all the time. and I don't like the cheap cover it comeswith though I could search around on etsy I suppose or come up with something myself to fix that detail..

I got my Kindle 3 wifi 2 days ago, first one I have ever had my hands on....and I love it!!!! (Its my Christmas present, I badgered dh until he let me get it early hehe) It is way better than my Jetbook Lite, which I will probably end up selling. I also got a $10 leather case from amazon which is perfect for it. The page turn is fast, very fast. The black flash is slightly annoying, when I notice it. I haven't played around with collections or anything, but I have emailed ebooks and also emailed and converted ebooks, and that feature works great!  I am extremely impressed with it and so happy that I got it.

I have heard it said that if the book allows text to speech and you turn it on the kindle will scroll the text.  You can set the speed of the robot voice to get it to move at your pace.  Some mention using this while exercising.

Since I dont have it cant confirm.  But it is another option for controlling the display.

you might want to spring for a bigger display area if you cant see enough text on the 7inch display.  Is quite a bit more expensive.....

My husband's response: "Aw, I was going to buy you one for Christmas."

I told him we could still use a Sony Reader or Nook. :-)

He said he would see how much we fight over this one. :-) Honestly though, I'm kind of disappointed. I *hate* the way it redraws and it feels larger than I want. I would really like an overgrown iPod best, I think.  But he loaded Bujold's Cryoburn on it for me, so I can test it with a good book I really want to read and see if I get used to it.

wow, I love mine, I hardly notice the black flash. Sometimes I don't notice it at all. I think all e-ink screens (such as Nook) do that. It is larger than my Jetbook Lite.  But I like it better, no glare on the screen, no battery bump on the back.

Have you nabbed the recent novel freebies from Amazon?  There are some good ones in there.

I think I may just need a non eink reader, though I'll see if I can adjust. The way the words appear in the black and then appear on white really bugs me, somehow.
