This popular history covers electricity, which, if you’re like me, has always been mysterious. Really interesting is the material on the inventors. Joseph Henry figured out the basis of the telegraph and eccentric Samuel Morse made the idea into a money maker. I learned that Alexander Graham Bell developed the telephone as a way to aid the deaf understand the spoken word. Bodanis also explains the accomplishments of Faraday, Kelvin, Clerk Maxwell and, Hertz and how they lead to radio, TV, and the semiconductor. Readers that enjoyed Bodanis’ House, his other book about the intersection of science, technology and the magical devices of daily life, will enjoy this one too.
