"Eleven Days" is the first is a series featuring Carl Houseman, a police detective in a small town in north eastern Iowa. Overall, the book a good police procedural but like many first time novelists, Harstad could not resist the temptation to throw everything AND the kitchen sink into this one. If one dead body is good, a dozen must be brilliant. If Satan worship is good, Satan worship with human sacrifice and group sex is even better. This book is a very fast read and for the most part, the writing is solid. There is a lot of violence and gore so if that bothers you, don't attempt this book. Otherwise, fasten your seatbelt for a fast and furious ride and be prepared to add Harstad's second book to your list as soon as you finish the first. That's exactly what I did.

I have to agree with Michael Connelly,"A hell of a first novel...gripping and unsettling."

From the first page to the last, I was on the edge of my seat. I rarely get a chance to sit and read for hours at a time, but once I opened this book, I took the time. Being a retired 911 Dispatcher in Iowa for many years, I am always critical of the writing when it pertains to procedure. Donald Harstad gave me nothing to complain about.

Carl Houseman is an ordinary Deputy doing an extraordinary job. He puts on his ballistic vest, straps on his gun and hits the streets. We all know that in a small town not much happens most of the time. But when a satanic cult begins to gain a huge presence in town, Deputy Houseman and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement gear up and get the bad guy.

I was off track a couple of times in solving this crime, but by the end I had figured it out. There were a few really good plot twists, strong and interesting characters and a whole lot of drama! I can not wait to start on "Known Dead", the next book in this series.

Eleven Days is a mystery tied into Satanism and murder. Carl Houseman has difficulty extracting information from the Satanic cult. The members are more concerned of hiding their sexual perversities than solving the murder of one of their own. This is a fast-paced criminal investigative novel.

In hindsight I would read this book if I had a children's book and this as my only reading source if I were snowbound in a house. Ok it wasn't that bad but not in my top 30 books.
