The Emancipation of Massachusetts Author:Brooks Adams From the preface to this (1962) edition, by Perry Miller: — The volume here reproduced is in fact two virtually separate books. Yet they are related, if only by such a fantastic link as the capricious genius of Brooks Adams (1848-1927) could devise and such an one, perhaps, as only he could suppose logical. — The first of these two is "The Emancip... more »ation of Massachusetts", which Houghton Mifflin published in January 1887. The current volume is reproduced from the text of the second edition, 1919, in which Adams made a few minor changes of style or phrase. For that edition he wrote what is really a second treatise in the form of a 168-page "Preface," which remains both to intrigue and to baffle us.
The "Emancipation" of 1887 was Brooks Adams first book, while the "Preface" is his next-to-last major effort.« less
