Both of these characters were very believable in the "baggage" they carried. Sometimes the issues authors give their characters seem a little trite and contrived, but as this story unfolds, Ms. Grey makes us believe that their experiences (and disappointments in themselves) truly could lead them down a path that winds up together. Your heart really goes out to both of them, and you want so much for them to be happy. Ordinarily in these stories, two people so radically different from each other (he was a playboy extraordinaire -- even by Presents standards, she's the innocent idealist) would have a much harder fit in feeling empathy and compassion for one another, let alone love. These two had an instant connection.

The story moves quickly, which is a bit of a surprise, given the amount of introspection each character has on its pages. The relationship evolves naturally, and as the story builds to its dramatic moments near the end, you really do wonder how it's going to turn out.
