I first read this book about 20 years ago and fell in love for the first time. The writing was so well done, that at the age of 12 I felt the pain Sophie and James went through when the war separated them. Theirs was a sweet, tender love that didn't yet know the destruction war brings. The love that Carl and Pia found later in the book, is a different one. It hurts to read about the disillusion and indiference Carl feels knowing who he was once upon a time. This is a book not only worth reading, but definately worth keeping!! In my opinion, this is the best book by RT Stevens.
