i have a question for the postal employees here:

can i use envelopes that have some postage stamps printed on them?  they are quite old, as there is maybe 8 to 10 cents printed on them. of course i would add postage to them to make the 44 cents. some of the envelopes say airmail, but i would use them just in the US.

Not a postal employee, but I would use them.  The Air Mail ones could be confusing, and there could be a rate issue.  The Cutie recently weeded out his stamp collection, so we've been using some old stamps on our outgoing mail.  Counter staff looks at them funny, but accept our mail...haven't had any returned either.

Stamps are always good for face value. As long as there is enough postage on there to cover the current rate, it is fine to use old stamps and stamped envelopes

To a collector, they may be worth much more than the face value of the postage.

Stamp collecting is not a very popular hobby with modern generations (DH recently had his collection professional appraised).  Unfortunately, unless they are very special they are worth little or nothing more than the face value.  Probably not worth the hassle to find a buy for .02 cents more than face value.
