I read this book back in junior high school and I loved it. It is a deeply touching story about one boy's struggle to overcome the disease that wants his life. I especially enjoyed the drawings that were part of "The Great Race." It shows that he wasn't concerned with dying because he was more concerned with life and living each day like it was his last. I didn't cry when I finished it, but I felt like I wanted to cry. I felt as though I had been with Doris Lund and her family throughout the whole ordeal. I felt as though I had watched my best friend die. I think it was because the author described the ordeal well enough for me to understand it. It may not be as good as DEATH BE NOT PROUD to some people (someone on Amazon gave it a 1-star review), but it's good enough for me.

" Come take me if yo ucan. I'm alive Damnit!"
Eric was seventeen when he heard the doctor's verdict about the disease that wanted his life. At first he and his family could not believe it. For Eric was the picture of everything a youth should be a champion athlete a splendid human being vibrant with energy and loved by all who knew him family teachers and friends.

This is a book I read many years ago in high school, and then I found it very heart-warming and touching. I have re-read it this time, and have found it to be even better than the first time! I felt for Doris' struggles to care for Eric and follow his wishes, and I also felt for Eric's struggles with cancer...a fantastic story that I think took a lot of courage for Doris to write.
