A fun romp through a universe that's a great exercise in world-building. Much better than the usual "man from planet without women meets women for first time" premise. Actual gay characters!

This book is wonderful, I hesitated to give it a five only because Bujold has other books that are even better, in particular the first 4 or 5 of the Vorkosigan series. Full of adventure, interesting characters that you won't find anywhere else - a truly original space opera. Enjoy, Jennifer

A Dendarii mercenary on a secret mission without Miles.

Dr. Ethan Urquhart, an obstetrician on a planet forbidden to women, is Chief of Biology at the Severin District Reproduction Center and one of the busiest men on the planet Athos. Then a mysterious genetic crisis threatens Athos with extinction. Drafted to brave the wider universe for his cloistered fellows in quest of new ovarian tissue cultures, Ethan braces himself for his first encounter with those most alien of aliens -- females of his own species.

Space Opera at its Finest. Man can Lois McMaster Bujold write and Miles is the perfect hero.
