The proper way to do it is to post the WL books directly to him on his WL page. It's not wrong, just do it right :)

ETA: Unless you meant for him to transfer more than one credit per book, that would be wrong, but if you meant for him to transfer one credit per each book, then all you need to do is post them directly to his WL and all is fair and above board and easy.

Go to your buddy's wishlist and find the book in question. DO NOT click on the entry of the book....stay on their wishlist. If you run your cursor over "Post this book", a little box will pop up that says, "Post this book into the system for this member". If you actually click on the book entry, it will take you into the main system and when you run your cursor over the "post this book" the little box that pops up will say "I have this book and want to post it into the system".

Here's the question:  Is it ethical on PBS, or breaking any kind of rules, if I offer to send some of these titles to him in exchange for him transferring some of his credits to my account?

Hi Scott, welcome to PBS.

I think you'll get a lot of answers to this question. Every so often people get into this huge debate about how the WL should work, especially since there's the possibility of a "new WL" looming for at least a couple of years.

It's not breaking any rules, as Sherry said, to post books directly to another specific member's WL rather than the first person queuing on the WL. However, if you are getting more than one credit per WL book, then you'll be breaking a rule. You can't advertise you are looking for WL books. There's even a thread in the Book Bazaar--ok'ed by the PBS site-- for people to advertise their WL books for a multiple-book order because that saves the sender money in shipping.

Whether it's ethical is another matter. Some would argue that violates the spirit of PBS because FIFO (first in, first out) was not followed. However, IMO it is ethical to post directly to someone's WL.  Before PBS ever registered on your consciousness, you were free to do whatever you want with your book, since it is your personal property. What changed by virtue of joining PBS to alter that "right"?  In your case, it sounds like you have some comraderie with this other person, and I think that's part of the spirit of the club. There's also lots of Games in the Discussion forum where WL books change hands without being posted to FIFO.

However, if you do post directly to other people's WLs, then I think you lose the right to complain about how other people are not following FIFO when it comes to youself being bypassed on your WL books lest you be rightfully considered a hypocrite.

Scott--Along with what everyone else said, I'd make sure you ask your buddy first if he'd like you to post the books directly to his WL.  If he's running low on credits or something, he may not be ready for the books just yet.  Probably he'll be thrilled to receive the books though--I know I would be!

I think it's perfectly ethical.

I figure it's just a fact that I am being passed in the WL line in favor of direct posting or the deals made to save on shipping. So I would never feel bad to do it. Just like I don't feel bad that I keep the majority of books I receive from here instead of posting them back into the system once I read them. The books are yours to do what you want with whether it's keeping them, directly posting them to another member, using them to prop your tv up, etc. ;)

Welcome to PBS Scott!

What Sherry said, and follow Hunter's directions for posting to a friend.  And yes, if you will be posting several books you may wish to pm first to check on credit availability...otherwise all or some of the books could roll over into FIFO and be offered to other/unknown members.

Regarding the ethics, PBS has provided the option 'button' to post books to friends.  If TPTB didn't intend it to be legal or ethical, the option wouldn't exist.  And postage is cheaper when you send multiples!!

Yeah, I agree.

To me, to even suggest that doing something the club not only approves of, but provides for, is 'unethical' or in some way against the interests of the club is just too silly to worry about.

People make up the strangest problems to get in a fluff over.
