This story is the struggles of immigration and the heroic individuals that came to America to make their fortunes. It is a warm story of continuing love which is richly written with fine details which are vivid and memorable.
This is the first Belva Plain book I have ever read. I enjoyed it very much and I plan on reading her other books too. The story moved very quickly but it did start to get long towards the end. All in all though the story and all the family members were interesting. I liked how each chapter was from the viewpoint of a different family member--I esp. liked Anna's chapters. They all dealt with a lot of hardships over the years. The ending made me a little teary eyed.
I have to admit that I am a reader by nature. Before I read this book I couldn't have told you what my favorite book was. There were so many. And then Evergreen by Belva Plain. Wow! What a book! I absolutely loved how it starts with her as a little girl and then has her grow up and have children and then include not only her children's lives but there spouses and children. Oh I can't say that I have ever read a better book than this one! It is, now I can finally say, My Favorite Book, THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE!
Absolutely enchanting story!!!
The tragedy of three generations ... from immigration to Vietnam.
Very enjoyable read, but of course, it's Belva Plain!
A best selling classic! Well worth the read.
A Towering modern classic of passion and ambiiton that forever changed the way we see the courageous immigrants who come to America's shores-the story of Anna Friedman transfixes us with the turbulent emotions of a woman and her family touched by war, tragedy, and the devastasting secrets of one forbidden love...bittersweet and evergreen.
I love the characters she creates.
A wonderful book by Belva Plain that follows the life of an immigrant woman's loves, family fortunes and a century's hopes and tragedies.

I love her books...I feel as though I am there with the characters.
Yearning for a better life, Anna Friedman fled Poland for New York at the turn of the century. Finding work as a maid for the Werner family, Anna discovers an elegance beyond her dreams - and the passion of Paul Werner, a man beyond her reach, even when she is in his arms. But it is Joseph Friedman she marries. And through an act of illicit passion that will haunt her through all her days, Anna lifts Joseph from poverty to a wealth on which the Friedman dynasyt would be based on for generations.
Excellent book. Generational book about a Jewish family.
I read this years ago and some of its simple beauty still stays with me.
This is what you would expect from Plain. A good story in an easy to read, entertaining style.
One of the greatest books that I have ever read. You do not want the story to end.
Saga style, and reads like you are studying your own family tree. One of my all time favs!
I always enjoy Belva Plain.
