Carol, because emergencies of some sort always seems to come up (that's life after all!).....is exactly why you must be strict with yourself and keep striving to put some money away every week.  There will always be emergencies whether you are prepared for them or not.  Better to be prepared.  Keep saving faithfully!!!

Carol that's the story of my life!  b ut you know, I tell myself to keep saving and if I have to take it ou then well it means I'm doing right becaus I ended up needing the savings and wouldn't have had it if I hadn't been saving all along! my first big try at savings I had $300 set aside and then my lab got an allergy attack/hot spot/puffy eyes...between her shots/ointment/heartworm prvention/flea prevention(for 2 big dogs) there went my savings as anyone with a pet can tell you it doesn't take long with a trip to the vet...but hey I felt bad using it but felt good knowing tht I had it and didn't have to pull out a credit card or put of fmy dog's treatment because of lack of funds.

I also got hit with the printer issue..paid for ink refils but then the stupid Dell printer didnt' recognzie the cartridges..don't ever by dell by the way..so off tow ally world I went to get an HP that I still don't understand but at least it works...

so don't worry..skim off savings where you can..I honestly dont' suffer from not eating out..it's f un here and there but oeverally I'm enjoying seeing what I can use from the pantry and how little i can get at the store..like a game. and my coworker (lucky me) brings healthified leftovers because her family hates leftovers except for her. one thing she has to push her hubby to do (don't know why) is that for a while he and about 4 of his coworkers would bring leftovers and trade so they weren't eating the same thing they had the night before. they seemed tolike it and she said he'd told her one coworker always wanted the healthy stuff she fixed and he'd get his king ranch casserole and be happy..so dont' know why that didnt' work but for some reason it didnt. I think it'd be fun if I had people at work to swap leftovers with but so far it's just the 2 of us and she doesnt 'like eating someone else's food so I try to briing her coupons or fruit or yogurt she likes and pay for fast food sometimes w hen we've done that I still thnk I come out ahead but she said the stuff would go in the trash if she couldn't eat it all in time.

anyways got OT as usual sorry! but just keep putting some aside and use it for emergencies or even as a little treat for yourself now and then. I used some of mine for windows a few months ago. I plan on using more to replace my deck. then I need/want new flooring inside...bye bye money but I'm trying to build it up more before spending any of it just in case because of this economy.

I know how you feel.  We were doing great had $600 saved as rainy day money, week later we had to buy a new car because I got into an accident.  We need a car because public transport is just affordable (take me 3 buses to get to work).

Before christmas we had saved money, cat got sick.

Everytime we have more then $300 saved something happens.

I know exactly what you all are saying.  I keep saving anyway -- never give up!  Even if I have to drain savings EVERY time we need something urgently --- I tell myself that at least because I put the money away in savings -- and we have some there ---- it keeps us from going into debt any further which is a great feeling.

This is funny.  I was saying to my friend once that everytime I save a little something comes up and I have to spend it.  She said: "that's why you had to save it, something always comes up".

Here are some tips I've received over the years, or come up with to help myself save:

1 - get a change jar....... everyone's tried this, but try to make yourself stay out of it.  When it's full, wrap the coins and deposit the money in your account at once.

2 - If your pay check is direct deposited, arrange with either your employer or your bank to have a small amount deducted automatically from each direct deposit and placed into your savings account.

3 - Buy a Kmart, Targetr or Walmart gift card (wherever you shop a lot) and every time you go into the store to make purchases, pull out the card and put another $5 or $10 on it.  This is how I save for Christmas....... I don't miss the small amounts, and the balance on the card adds up..... when Christmas gets here I just use the card to pay for Christmas gifts.

4 - If you don't have enough to open a bank savings account (most take $2-300 or even more to open the account........... open one in a child's name (they usually only require $25 or so to open)............ build it up to the $325, then open your own account, and gift your child with the $25 and help teach them to start saving too......

5 - Find a money-saver buddy......... in other words, go to someone you TRUST to hold your money.  Give this person $5-10 out of your checks and ask them to hold it in a safe place and not let you have it unless its an emergency --- a real emergency.  If this money is out of your reach, and this person is the RIGHT person for the job, then this will work.  It shouldn't be someone who lives with you - too easy to borrow from the fund...

Hope those help someone.
God bless you!
Amy
