The Excellency Of The Word; together with, A Survey Of Homiletics Education
The Excellency Of The Word together with A Survey Of Homiletics Education Author:William H. Nes, Noah E. Fehl T he Excellency of the Word is a dynamic analysis of the function of Christian preaching revealed in terms of the greatness of its subject. Beautifully written, its own poetry testifies to the majesty of its message. A work of exceptional discernment and sweeping power, it evidences a new scope in discovering for others the power of the form of ... more »communication which has advanced the expansion of Christianity since our Lord Himself preached the first Great Sermon.
Dr. Nes' writings exemplify what he urges upon others-the imagination necessary to help people feel the movement, the meaning of the whole Christian story, even when attention is concentrated on a single moment of history or a single point. Voicing a companionate appreciation of St. Augustine, he exhorts the preacher to speak intelligibly, artistically, and movingly. He will disturb the complacency of those who would leave the arts of rhetoric and the powers of persuasion in the hands of the opponents of the Faith. Not only young men at the beginning of their ministry, hut also well-schooled preachers-yes, even the great preacher of today-will be both better preachers and better Christians for having listened to the voices which ring through this hook. The author sees not only the need, but foresees the oncoming, of a "noble renascence of Christian preaching." He states, "That is why I have been playing to you a theme and variations whose melody is the Excellency of the Divine Word. ... I, have no thesis to argue, no technique to expound, no brave new method to purvey." But despite his modest disavowal, his hook could well be the catalyst to fire such a renascence into dynamic, victorious reality.« less
