Do you have a favorite instructor? Favorite video?

My current favorites are Ellen Barret for pilates-ish fusion workouts, and Baron Baptiste for Yoga. I also really like yoga with Steve Ross, the guy who does the Inhale show on TV.

I do a lot of excercising to videos, and am always looking for something new with an instructor who doesn't get on my nerves.

I'm a Billy Blanks fan.  He doesn't yell and is very encouraging.  I also appreciate that NOT all the people in the videos are perfect!  I like the kicking and punching.

Leah - Nice to meet another video exerciser or "vidiot" as we call ourselves over at VideoFitness.com.  Ever go there?  It's an awesome site!  Other than PBS, it's my most used on-line resource for my hobbies of reading and working out!  Also, it's nice to meet another "veg head" around here. I'm not vegan, but I'm "mostly" vegetarian.  I occasionally eat fish or seafood.

Anyway, as your questions, I have lots of favorites!

Cathe Friedrich -  I'm a big Cathe fan.  Love both her cardio and weights workouts and own almost all of them!

Kelly Coffey-Meyer - Again, I like both her weight workouts and her strength training workouts, and she's the instructor who actually made me like cardio/weights circuit workouts.

Tony Horton - He's not my favorite instructor (he's okay, but I don't love him like many people do), but I love his P90X system. I've done it twice.  The follow up, P90X+ is okay, but I prefer the original videos.  Awesome system.

Chalene Johnson - She's such a goof, but her funky, groovy kickboxing is so much fun. Hers are my "go to" workouts when I'm feeling bummed or not really like working out.  I'm not so keen on her strength training videos (except Total Body Blast), but I'm going to be watching for reviews on her new ChaLEAN Extreme system of videos.

Les Mills - I'm a kickboxing fanatic, and nobody does it better than Dan and Rach from Les Mills' Body Combats.  Of course, they're hard to come by as they are only legally sold to certified Les Mills instructors, although if one is willing to pay the price and incur the wrath of the Les Mills people, you can buy them on e-Bay.  I happen to come by several Body Combats in a box of exercise vids my aunt picked up for me at a garage sale of all places.  Body Combats are awesome cardio workouts involving various forms of martial arts.

Ilaria Montagnani - Another expert kickboxer with perfect attention to detail.  Sometimes I like dancey kickboxing like Turbo Jam, but a lot of times I want the serious stuff like the Body Combats and Ilaria's stuff.

I also do a ton of yoga, and my favorite video instructors are Eoin Finn (DH and I took a live class with him once, and it was phenomenal!), Bryan Kest, Baron BaptisteAlan Finger (from Yoga Zone - although he actually only instructs on one or two Yoga Zone videos), and many more.  I'm also a kundalini yoga devotee, and Ravi Singh & Ana Brett are so awesome, and I enjoy Maya FiennesGurmukh, and Nirvair Singh Khalsa as well.

Pilates falls in and out of favor with me, but when I'm down with it, I tend to like Hilary Burnett's stuff, although Moira Stott is probably the master at teaching proper technique. Too bad she's as dry as day old toast.  LOL!

Boy, got really long winded here, sorry!

Christi Taylor - Step Aerobic

And all the Biggest Loser Workouts for diversity. :-)

I'm starting to do Yoga. I even bought myself a yoga set with the dvd and book for Christmas. I really hope to start to do Yoga at least 3-4 times a week  and basically live healthy in 2009.  There is a show on cable called Namaste Yoga that really made me want to try it.

I, too, am an exercise "vidiot". I love the FIRM, Leslie's (for walking/jogging),  Debbie Seibers (Slim Series) and various yoga dvds.  I am choreographically challenged and have to keep it simple.

Rhonda - Would love to hear your thoughts on CLX once you have a chance to try the workouts. I've been following the thread on it at Video Fitness.  I tried the "sneak peek" workout that came with some other Beach Body product.  I couldn't decide if I liked it or not.  Chalene is just soooooo funky and fun.  I think of her, and I think kickboxing party in a box, not lifting weights.  Plus, I've got so many weights workouts.  It's a moot point right now since I have a bulged disk and until it's better, I'm restricted to my physical therapy stretches and am now able to do a bit of cardio, so I'm starting with some Leslie Sansone vids I got from the library.  Hopefully I'll be back to my intense workouts soon!  Anyway, keep us posted on CLX!

Wow, I didn't know there were people out there like me, my sister calls me the "exercise freak" ! I've never been to a gym, and haven't taken classes, I am a video nut, I had no idea there was a word for us! Everything is done at home in front of my tv! Right now I've been hooked on the Yoga Booty Ballet series, its fun.

When I was in better shape I loved Cathe. I need to work back up to her stamina though. I love Cathe, The FIRM, Kari Anderson, Kathy Smith, and Karen Voight just to name a few. My video collection is embarrassingly huge. I really should be in better shape.

Amber - Are you a member of videofitness.com?  There's a whole world of people like you (and me) over there!  Check it out!  It's a great resource and lots of fun to chat with others who like working out at home.  We all know that the next best thing to exercising is talking about exercise!

I have just started exercising to videos and so far I love it!

I started with Leslie Sansone, then got some Firm and The Biggest Loser from the library, then bought Tami Lee Beginner Stretch, Crunch Boot Camp and The Firm Super Cardio Mix.  I just order the KickB*** from Anna Benson's site, Fitness Favorites: http://www.fitnessfavorites.com/  They are for the older exerciser and since I am over 50, that applies!

Thanks for telling me about videofitness.com.  I will like going there as I have so much to learn.

Hi, Leah!  If you join VF, PM me your user name so I can "watch" for you.  There are check in groups that are lots of fun at VF.  I'm a member of three of them.  If you're interested in checking in and chatting with some VF buddies, let me know.  You can join any group you want to, but I'd love to have you any of the ones I'm in.

Wanna kill yourself, try the girls of envy.

Not kidding, killer workouts

course I am a good 20-25 years older than they are.

I have exercise tv on demand on the cable package and that's wonderful cause it's about 50 programs on all levels and all types and it changes every week.

Shelly,

Hi! Figures we'd both end up here :)

I can't even name all my favorite instructors-I love kickboxing (Turbo Jam, Kimberly Spreen, Powerstrike, Janis Saffell) Leslie Sansone,

Gin Miller, Tamilee Webb, Ravi  Singh/Ana Brett (kundalini yoga) Yoga  Zones, Tracey Staehle, Sara Ivanhoe, and Sean O'Malley-known as Cardio Coach who makes using a treadmill and recumbent bike fun and challenging.

I just ordered the first season of Namaste yoga.

I also really like Ellen Barrett. I just tried her Weight Watchers walking dvd for a change from Leslie...I like Petra Kolber a lot, also.

I'm dying to try Chalean Extreme, but don't have the money for it right now.

I'm sherry7899 on videofitness.

Sherry

Sherry - Hello, my friend and fellow Vidiot!  So cool that you stopped by here.  I was so happy to finally see a health & fitness forum. As you may have noticed, I'm busy trying to recruit people to VF!  LOL!   Let me know what you think of Namaste Yoga.  I was all hot for it for awhile, but didn't have the funds to order it. Now I'd forgotten about it as it hasn't been mentioned on VF lately.  See you around!!

Does anyone know of a good Tai Chi Video? I do much better when the instructor shows instruction from the back. If the instructor is facing the camera (and viewer) as in the majority of videos I get confused. Does that happen to anyone else? I did run across one video a few years back where they went very slowly and showed the moves from the front and back but can't remember the name of it. I'm 55, overweight by 20 lbs. and have a disc problem in my back so Tai Chi is the way to go for me until I get in shape. Any suggestions for a video?

I enjoy Tai Chi dvds by Scott Cole, but he does face the camera.

I"ll try to find some links for clips of him.

There are some clips on his website: which is www.scottcole.com

For some reason I can't get a link directly to his dvds to post, but if you go to his site and click on "shop"

it will list his dvds. There are some video clips there. He's very down to earth with a great sense of humor. (and

fun to look at, too :)

Take care,

 Sherry

Hi everybody! Thanks for all of the input. I forgot that I posted this, and haven't been back to check in.

Hi, Shelley! Thanks for taking the time to give me a detailed reply. I have P90X, but have never done it. I listen to my husband grunt and groan through it, and it scares me. ;)

Do you have a favorite Charlene Johnson video? She sounds like the type of instructor I need right now. I want to get started doing some kickboxing workouts, but I need something fun to get me motivated.

What about Ilaria Montagnani? Do you have a favorite?

I want to get a heavy bag and get serious about doing more cardio. I've been such a slacker this past year, and I need to get moving.

I like the term vidiot. I'll have to check out that website.

Leah - I have all the Turbo Jam cardio videos, and it's hard to pick a favorite. They're all similar, it's usually just the length of the workout that varies.  I'm not a fan of Chalene's non-cardio stuff, except for one videos, Total Body Blast (I think), which is done primarily with a stability ball.  As for Ilaria, I have all of her older Powerstrike Workouts (and a couple from an earlier series, Pre-Miellenium), however, all of Ilaria's older vids are OOP (out of production).  It used to be that if you went to Ilaria's website and e-mailed her, she'd get your what you wanted. I'm not sure if she still does that, but you could check it out.  Otherwise, the only Powerstrikes widely available now are Power Strikes 4 and 5 (which is brand new) and her new BodyStrikes and Abs & Pushups Plus DVDs.  I don't have the three newest ones, but they've gotten pretty good reviews at videofitness.  Check out -

http://www.collagevideo.com/searchresults.aspx?type=instructor&search=ilaria+montagnani

for a breakdown, clips and reviews of her newer workouts.

P90X is tough but totally do-able. You just need to modify and listen to your body.  Some people love Tony Horton, some hate him. I'm kind of in the middle.  He's okay, and once in awhile his goofiness makes me smile.

Maybe we'll see you around videofitness!  Let me know if you join!

Thanks Sherry, I checked out Scott Cole's website and it looks like it might work for me. He does it much faster than I've seen it done but will definitely check it out : ) Thanks. Bev

My favorite is probably Leslie Sansone.  I love her walking videos.  I enjoy Kathy Smith's videos too.  I like some of Denise Austin though something about her voice sometimes gets on my nerves!
