I only recently discovered James Alan Gardner, and I am thoroughly enjoying his writing. His plots are solid, but not predictable, and his characters are competent but don't take themselves too seriously. This is the second book of his that we have read aloud--a testament to his fluid writing style and fast moving, action-packed plots.
