I had read Barber's book on Tokyo, and liked it, so was interested in how he "defines" Europe. This volume may be small, but it's no casual read-through in an afternoon. In a nutshell: after brief sojourns in Albania, Lisbon and other peripheral parts of the continent, the author concentrates upon the working class, immigrant "outer" neighborhoods of Berlin and Paris to present his idea of Post-War Europe, rather than the prosperous center-city tourist zones.
