This is a very long and very different novel that gathers you in until you feel like you have lived alongside of the characters. Asya is an Egyptian girl whose family is liberal, comfortably well off and educated. Asya is all of those things as well as spoiled and emotionally immature. You will learn a lot about middle Eastern politics circa 1960-80, and about how rich children were raised at that time, the values and mores of the society, especially those related to sexual identity. It is very frank and explicit. Their are several "love" encounters including one with a hippie type American who is basically a jerk. Asya was far more enamored of him than I was. Her Egyptian husband is close to perfect in spite of the short comings Asya describes. Very interesting in many aspects. I recommend it!
