I didn't like this book (or series) as much as I liked his Tyrants and Kings series. This book is not nearly as well written. The characters really aren't endearing or likeable. The plot is uneven and far-fetched - maybe because his characters can't carry the story that well. It's mostly a series about the "down-trodden and misfits of society" and their worth or lack thereof. This book may be the weakest of the 3 in the trilogy. But there are all sorts of magic, sword fights, "enchanted" animals, trickery, politics, and war. But I really felt like this was maybe one of the first drafts of the book and not a finished product. It could have been better.

There are plenty of things to like about this book, which is heavily based on the Arthurian love triangle story. But ultimately it seemed unsatisfying and weird. I wanted to like it more than I did. The writing seemed flat in a lot of places.
