I've been poking around FABIL and it is entertaining, but there are a couple things that would be nice.  Before sending them in as suggestions I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a setting somewhere that would let me do this.

*Mark a book as "TBR" or "I have" or similar, without having to star it.  I AM interested in it, so I don't want to mark it as NI and maybe mess up future recommendations, but I already have it.  I don't use my TBR list b/c I don't trust them not to do something with it, but I might start if I could +TBR items on FABIL and make them leave the suggested list.

*Block it showing books not available in the system. I already have 200 books on my WL. I'm not really seeking more.  Usually FABIL shows me a few that are available and a bunch that aren't.  I'd really like to just not see non-available books.  It's not a useful recommendation if I can't order it.

*Say "Don't use that book as recommedation basis!" I think they are getting pulled off my shelf. (The If you Liked 'Title' you might like... section) I don't know why, I haven't reviewed them, I didn't read them, and I don't want them used as a basis of recommending books. Maybe an option to just use books I've reveiwed would take care of this problem.

Those sound like great suggestions, Kayote!  Well thought out and well-expressed.  I think you should send them in as feedback to the Team.

I think all of your suggestions are great, but I am realllllly in love with this one:

*Mark a book as "TBR" or "I have" or similar, without having to star it.  I AM interested in it, so I don't want to mark it as NI and maybe mess up future recommendations, but I already have it.  I don't use my TBR list b/c I don't trust them not to do something with it, but I might start if I could +TBR items on FABIL and make them leave the suggested list.

I have wondered if I'm messing up my future recommendations.

I've wished that they have a "I have" column for a long time.  That way maybe some of the books on the FABIL list wouldn't keep popping up.

I have many of the books in my FABIL, but haven't read them.

I've started going through my books, and adding them to my TBR file because if I just add them from FABIL, they might be a different copy from what I have (PB vs HB - different ISBN, etc., and I could have one that I think is on someone's WL, read it hurridly and find that what I have is a PB and they want a HB).

Think the suggestions are great.  Pat

I added one more and sent it in. I added:

*A button to allow a review to be written. I prefer reviews to merely stars, but I have to go to the book page to do the review.  Also, when I select +BIR it informs me it's already on my BIR and still doesn't make the rec go away (as it does when I NI it).

I received back:

Dear Kayote,

Thanks for all these great suggestions! Some of them would not be too difficult, and others will take quite a bit of work. We've passed them along to Len, who's our FABIL guru and he'll incorporate the ones he can as time permits.

Thank you for being a Charter Member of the best book club in America. Please tell everyone who enjoys reading about our club, because the more members we have the more books for everyone to trade!

So, yay!

Now, I really should go back to work and quick clicking around on FABIL. I did find a book to order I thought was on my WL but apparently not (in any form).  Heh!

I am fascinated sometimes, though.

Sinced you liked Aku-Aku (a non-fiction account of floating across the ocean on an old-style raft to prove it could be done), you might like Calvin and Hobbes.

Well, yes, I do like Calvin & Hobbes...so it is correct. I'm just not sure how they get from book A to book B!

great suggestions. I agree with everyone about the "I have" option. Some books are actually on my BIR or TBR list and they still come up, probably because one is hardcover and one paperback.

They've been making changes!

If you look at the bigger FABIL list (showing them all) there is now the ablity to order or delete or star (no review button, but stars seem to be the big push), rather than just "Not Interested".   R&R said that putting it on the BIR doesn't remove it b/c people wanted to be able to do more with it (not sure what else could be done, but so be it) but to delete it after starring it if you are done with it.

I did ask for clarification that deleting it won't impact future recommendations, but haven't heard back.

It sounds like deleting something off FABIL will mean it does not appear on FABIL again, but doesn't impact future suggestions that might be based on that book.

Only thing I wish was there was a +TBR button, or at least some indication a book is on my TBR so I can toss it off FABIL without worry, and a Review button rather than just the stars.  I know, never satisfied!

It's much nicer, though!

Just received confirmation--clicking Delete has nothing to do with future recommendations, other than making it so you won't get THAT book again.  What you have tossed is not figured into future suggestions.

*off to delete a LOT of things from my FABIL that I've already read*

Find A Book I Might Like.  You can find it under your account in lists--same place as your wish list & reminder list.
