The Fabulous Flemmings of Kathmandu: The story of two doctors in Nepal
The Fabulous Flemmings of Kathmandu The story of two doctors in Nepal Author:Grace Nies Fletcher Here is the story of a remarkable couple whom the author calls "Silent Samaritans," for they went to Nepal not to preach the cause of Christianity -- but to show it by their work: they have brought to a remote, isolated part of the world the kind of medical care that country had never known. — Their intent started in 1949 with Dr. Bob Fleming, an... more » ornithologist, who received permission to enter the country to collect rare bird specimans. When he reported to his wife, Bethal, a physician, on the seriously ill, uncared for people he saw everywhere, they were both determined to do all they could to return as medical missionaries, even though most of Nepal and especially its captial city, Kathmandu, was closed to foreigners. It was 5 years before they were allowed to open their first clinic and even then, the terms were severe. But they went knowing that proselytizing was forbidden, and so the only way of showing their own faith was to demonstrate it by their deeds.
In 1956 Dr. Bob as administrator and Dr. Bethal as chief physician opened the first modern hospital in Nepal.
They made of it a hospital operating under the highest medical standards - a hospital which has received doctors, nurses, patients, and visitors of many races and creeds from all over the world.
This is an inspiring story of these 2 pioneers -- against the background of a country just emerging from the Middle ages.« less
