I just had something odd happen:

I requested a book on 7/7, and it shows as accepted and the wrapper printed on 7/8.  Now a week has gone by and nothing- not marked mailed, no message about a delay.  Then just now I get the automated "Cannot Mail" message with the sender stating "I received an email from the recipient saying to cancel the order."  Whaaat, I'm thinking? I never sent a message to cancel!  I was getting a bit concerned over the delay but hadn't done anything about it yet.

Has anyone had this type of thing happen before?  Do you think the sender just messed up and then was blaming the cancellation on me?  Will their cannot mail statement reflect poorly on my account habits?

I did message them asking if they had this transaction confused with another, but haven't received a response yet.  Also, there are no books currently on the member's bookshelf so that's curious...

I don't think it will reflect upon you at all. As a CYA, I would use the "Contact Us" link and let the team know that you did not ask to cancel. They can verify that by checking PMs. Sorry that happened to you.

I would not bother contacting PBS. They don't care in the least about a canceled book order, it completely does not matter to your account, there is a cancel button for a reason and the reason is that so book orders can be canceled without PBS needing to be involved. The only reason they might care a little bit is if there is a system glitch in the programming that caused this, however, it's much more likely that the other member has somehow gotten something confused.

I agree with Sara.  Hope you get a copy of the book soon!

PBS can see all the correspondence between members on the site. They will know what the sender received in PMs and from whom.

Never had that happen, but I did request a book once, the sender told me she couldn't mail the book, then three weeks later asked if I received it; I told her she canceled the order - it was on my transaction list.  Then this week she offered the same book again.  So we'll see if I get it this time.

Maybe, the sender got that email that tells you to mark it mailed or it will be cancelled email and misunderstood?  IDK. It is an odd thing, but I wouldn't worry about it.

UPDATE:

I received the book!  It was entirely hand addressed, no Request ID# included, but seems to be from the member that cancelled (first name matches).  Can't mark the book received because it was never marked mailed!  No response to the original PM I sent inquiring about the cancellation.  I have not reached out again.  Also, I don't want to gift a credit with no communication between us.  Oh well?

(Forum etiquette question:  Should I have added this info to my original post instead of putting it down here? Pretty new to posting - thanks!)

Janice, the book will be on your Transaction Archive and you can marked received from there.  Also the members name will be listed.

Valerie-

There is no option to mark the book received on my Transaction Archive because the sender actually canceled the request, it did not just time out and automatically cancel.  There is only a PM button and the Request Details link.  The first name on the package I received does match the original sender so I'm pretty sure its the same person.

You're right, it's odd!  They cancelled and still mailed it to you?

Yes!  They canceled and beyond that wrote that I was the one that wanted it canceled! But I didn't do that!  hahaha  Definitely some confusion happening I guess.

Well, if you are pretty sure it's the same sender I would go ahead and give the credit.

It sounds like they canceled the wrong transaction by mistake, got your PM then decided to mail you the book. I'd just send another PM saying you received the book and was wondering it that member mailed it to you so that you can buddy a credit for it.

If the member accessed your address at any time, then there should be the option to mark the book received in the TA.  You can send in Feedback and ask the PBSTeam to look at the book and see if they can follow who got your address to send it to you and how you might go about giving the credit. Just make sure you aren't getting a second copy from someone else if you give it to someone who cancelled a transaction. If you requested a book that had other copies available, the system would have immediately requested another copy for you and this copy you received could be from an active transaction on your En Route to Me Tab.

There is no "Was Book Received" button because the potential sender canceled the swap.  It is confirmed in the help documents that if the sender cancels, the button is removed.  The book only appears once in my Transaction Archive, and is labeled as "Request Canceled by Sender".  The book was a wish listed book, and so when I ended up receiving the book I removed the book from my wishlist.  There were no other offers of the book from anyone else in between; is is not in my En Route tab.

I understand that this member deserves a credit for the book they sent, and I have reached out a second time asking for confirmation that they sent the book so I can properly reimburse them for it.  But without a response or any acknowledgement of the situation, I don't want to gift it over.  I know I can have PBS investigate and be mostly sure that this is the person that sent the book.  But giving them a credit without being sure that the sender knows and understands why just makes me feel like I am enabling a possibly poor sender!
