Search - The Fallen Man (Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee)

Jim Chee & Joe Leaphorn novel. Former is now a Lt (and not real thrilled about the paperwork), latter is now retired (and not real sure about it either).

This was a really good Hillerman. He intertwines the characters, who never quite work together but cross paths, often intentionally. It was also a turning point between Chee & Janet Pete, which was well handled. Bernie appears here too--maybe for the first time? I did enjoy her part of the story, even if she was mostly working on a side-plot--but that's one of the joys of Hillerman. He has side plots which never directly impact the main plot, but do contribute to the character's involvement, and provide a depth to the story. Things are going on other than just the main plot, that impact characters but maybe not directly the plot.

Detangling the Fallen Man puzzle was interesting, especially the final solution & motivation. The ending reminded me of a quote attributed to a Navajo about Hillerman's books--"In his books, we win." The ending was good, I did like it, but it also showed the character of the "bad" guy, and confirmed his motivation.

Good book! Hillerman is usually good, and this is a good Hillerman!

another great book from tony hillerman with joe leaphorn and jim chee. i enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put it down.
who do the bones belong to that were found under the peak of ship rock mountain. could these bones be the missing ones of the man who disappeared 11 years ago. why would an old navajo canyon guide be shot at 300 miles from ship rock.retired joe leaphorn learns of the above information and wonders if these are pieces of a puzzle he couldn't solve 11 years ago. jim chee doesn't think these two incidents are related at all but when something occurs close to home he and joe leaphorn work together to solve this mystery.

Hillerman once again takes the reader on a smooth paced trip along a winding path following pieces and clues where they may lead. watching the minds of Leaphorn and Chee as they start on two different trails and cross over at several places to come together in the end with the answers that we sought all along.
