My Family and Other Animals Author:Gerald Durrell I suppose most of us have, at some time or other, dreamed of chucking up our job and migrating to a sunlit Mediterranean island. Unhappily, these dreams never seem to come to anything, unless, that is, your name happens to be Durrell. In their case the suggestion was mooted one drizzling, leaden August afternoon in Bournemouth; and off they we... more »nt, without a second's thought, Mother, Larry, Leslie, Margo, and Gerald himself, the baby of the family.
As we might expect, the young Gerrie spent the majority of his time chasing the more exotic fauna with which the island abounded. Bur the Durrell family itself behaves in as hilarious and exotic a way as any of the lesser fauna. every day brings its ration of lunatic parties, improbable guests and even more improbable domestic crises.
This is an enchanting and utterly unique book, by turns comic, lyrical, mocking, tender and absurd. It is beyond doubt the most delightful book Durrell has ever written.
