I'm working on a paper for school and need a good Children's/Young Adult Fantasy book to compare to either Peter Pan or Mr. Was...any suggestions?  I would like something that features either a portal (for time travel) or an alternate reality/plane/dimension (ie: neverland).

What are some of your favorites in this genre?

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle involves other dimensions...

Other books in that series would also meet the requirement.  Many Waters involves time travel, as does An Acceptable Time and a Swiftly Tilting Planet.

The Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones involve alternate worlds, particularly Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant.

The His Dark Materials series also involves alternate worlds, but not until the second one, The Subtle Knife.

The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis

  • set in two different worlds, where the children travel back and forth (Narnia and England)
  • Similar time period to Peter Pan
  • Cou;d use one of the seven books or all of them as a whole
  • deals with magic and imagination like Peter Pan
