Praised by his superiors but with troubled conscience, he sought counseling by clergy. On Calicoan Island, Anthony had an affair with Adele, a fifteen-year-old native girl, but had to leave her behind to serve in China. It troubled him. He was afraid Adele might be pregnant. Distracted by duty in Tsingtoa, China, he was tempted often by prostitutes but this time succumbed, although feeling guilty. Home in America, Anthony went to a Catholic college, then worked in Advertising. He met Frankie, now a priest. Anthony also became a priest. He became a missionary and with Fr. Iola, a native monk, returned to Calicoan, Philippine Islands. Muslim unrest hampered their religious mission. Father Anthony met Adele, now with a teenaged son, Ceebi. He was tempted by love for her but resisted because of his vocation. Adele still loved him. The Muslims, sensing the relationship, kidnapped Adele to thwart the mission. She was rescued by Ceebi and the two priests. Father Anthony was wounded in the conflict, contracting fatal gangrene. He reconciled with Adele; heard her Confession and accepted Ceebi as his son, then died. He wanted to be buried at sea. Father Iola and Adele fulfilled his wish but Adele, in despair, drowned herself along with him. Father Iola returned to shore. The mission eventually thrived, and Father Iola counseled Ceebi about becoming a priest--Father Anthony's wish for his son.« less
