I know this has been done before but I want to do it again here!

Post a favorite quote from any source........

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there.”

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

 Jalal ad-Din Rumi

Are these supposed to be quotes about atheism etc or just general quotes that we really love?  For the time being, I'm including a few of each:

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.- Marcus Auerlius

Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.- Don Hirschberg

I do not believe in God because I do not believe in Mother Goose.- Clarence Darrow

I do not consider it an insult, but rather a compliment to be called an agnostic. I do not pretend to know where many ignorant men are sure -- that is all that agnosticism means.- Clarence Darrow

Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?- Groucho Marx

To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.- Oscar Wilde

All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people.- William Powell

Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die. Mel Brooks

I've always loved that Mel Brooks quote!

"Patriotism is not enough, I must not have hatred or bitterness towards anyone." Edith Cavell, right before she faced the firing squad

"I'm so sorry if I'm alienating some of you
Your whole f***ing culture alienates me"
Bikini Kill

ETA - this is the best book of quotations ever.  I highly recommend tracking down a copy.

My favorites are:

"Most people are as happy as they make they're minds up to be."  Abraham Lincoln

"How much we enjoy what we have is more important than how much we have.  Life is full of people who have more than they know what to do with, but cannot be content.  It is the capacity to enjoy life that brings contentment." - unkown

My favorite quotes all come from the author Richard Bach

"Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours."

"If it's never our fault, we can't take responsibility for it. If we can't take responsibility for it, we'll always be its victim."

"If you will practice being fictional for a while, you will understand that fictional characters are sometimes more real than people with bodies and heartbeats."

"If your happiness depends on what somebody else does, I guess you do have a problem."

Never get into a battle of wits with an idiot.  They will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

"Strange are the ways of humankind, [. . .] There exist rain and wind and fire, and interdependant systems of organisms, and the myriad other elements that sustain Life.  Instead of esteeming these elements, we personify abstractions, that we may avoid responsibility for our own destinies, and lay the blame elsewhere."  -- Bliant, a character in Cecilia Dart-Thornton's The Well of Tears

Caligula was nucking futs, you know.

Evan - One of my other favorite quotes is your sig.

And this gem from a crappy teen movie:  "Superman isn't brave. He's smart, handsome, even decent. But he's not brave. No, listen to me. Superman is indestructible, and you can't be brave if you're indestructible. It's people like you and your mother. People who are different, and can be crushed and know it. Yet they keep on going out there every time."

Yep - he sure was.  I don't think his philosophy of being feared worked out too well for him, considering his own Praetorian Guard murdered him in a palace corridor.

Groucho Marx:  "Whatever it is, I'm against it!"

Dorothy Parker:  "Heterosexuality is not normal, just common."

H.L. Mencken: "In this world of sin and sorrow, there is always something to be thankful for. As for me, I am thankful that I am not a Republican."

Peter Abelard:  "At last I have come to Paris."

Myself:  "There are no emergencies in academics."

I can't believe I forgot my all-time favorite!

"There is no sin but ignorance."  (that's not the full quote, but I like the 2nd half more. The first part of it is: I count Religion but a childish toy")

-Christopher Marlowe

This is probably my favorite quote of all time:

" "Maybe that's it," I say gently. "With what you were talking about before. The world being broken. Maybe it isn't that we're supposed to find the pieces and put them back together. Maybe *we're* the pieces." ... "Maybe," I say, "what we're supposed to do is come together. That's how we stop the breaking." "

--David Levithan (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist)

Two fantastic excerpts from Stephen Fry, interviewed this week on The Skeptic Zone podcast:

" . . . to me, the true mystery of the universe is something that is available to all not through the arcane rules of some non-sensical, unprovable drivel, but is there with your eyes.  It's there to see by just simply recognizing observable laws and repeatable instances of things like sunsets, and how they work, and seeing what we've done on the basis of that understanding . . ."

" . . .all these things tell us so much about how science is right.  It's a theology that makes machines work, but it's a theology that doesn't tell us how to behave, and doesn't have the impertinence to assume that we are all born guilty."

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.-- Mohandas Gandhi

Obviously, this statement cannot be applied to all Christians (I can think of many), but I understand the sentiment.

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. -Albert Einstein

Truth, in matters of religion, is simply the opinion that has surrvived. -Oscar Wilde

The belief that there is only one truth, and that oneself is in possession of it, is the root of all evil in the world.  -Max Born

and for something a tad less serious...

I am as pure as the driven slush.-Tallulah Bankhead

Stacey, I love that quote. When I was in my early twenties my boss had it on a poster in her office. It is soooo true.

One of my favorites is actually something that I saw on a bumper sticker:

"If going to church makes you a Christian, does going to a garage make you a car?"

Here are a few of my very favorites, and I am sure I'll be back with more later.

  1. "To live is so startling it leaves time for little else." (Emily Dickinson)
  2. "There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."
    -- Albert Einstein
  3. "There is properly no history; only biography."
    -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
