Ha Ha!  I beat everyone for this month.

I am reading two books, "Burial at Sea" by Charles Finch and "Crocodile on the Sandbank" by Elizabeth Peters.  They are both very good.  Will be on to the next Charles Finch book when I am done with Burial at Sea.

Hello All --- February already!!  Finished "The Black Cat" by Martha Grimes and am reading "The Apothecary Rose" by Candace Robb.

We are meant to get some snow this evening I think unless the forecast has changed and I do not know it.

Geri --- hope you and Mom are okay.  Sounds as though it was not an easy ride!!!

Becky, it wasn't easy.  At one point hospice said if I insisted on bringing mom home without their approval they would drop us.  I told that woman I had no problem with that.  Little did she know I had the number for another hospice at home.  Plus the doctor had released mom.  She said if we drop you you'll have to pay for the ambulance to get her home.  I said if necessary.  I think she became so angry at me she sent me for prescriptions 16 miles one way out of my way to a CVS and I have three within two miles of my house.  As I said it was drama and a saga.  But mom is home and happy.  To me that's what counts.  That's what hospice is supposed to be isn't it?  Making a person comfortable in their last days.

Reading Flasks and Foul Play / Ellen Mansor Collier on Kindle.  Fun since it takes place in the 1920s and the author is using the slang of the day.  She even provided a site if some words didn't make sense.  I haven't used it yet.  I'm really not that old I think it's the old movies I watched on late night TV.  You dirty rat!  laugh  And, that's from an old Jimmy Cagney movie.

Marla according to Fantasic Fiction Edward Wright is supposedly taking time off from writing that series and currently writing stand alones.  I just picked up Clea's Moon.

So Geri --- Are you signed up with a hospice provider???  Did you have to go with the hostile one???

Next off topic question --- has everyone received the e-mail about membership fees???  Any thoughts???  Frankly I am surprised it has not occurred sooner.  Hopefully it will not deter many from being able to continue with PBS if they choose.

At the moment I'm still with the hostile one - but I believe it's switched to home care rather than hospital care so I won't have to deal with her.

Becky, I got the email yesterday.  I don't think any gold key people will drop out but if you go to the discussion forums in the Book Bazaar people are selling their credits for as little as $1.75.  Many have pulled their books.  Up at the top yesterday there were over 4.5 million books to be swapped.  Today it's down to 4.3 million.  In Club Member Thoughts there are many people saying they can't afford the fees.  If they go with the low one it's 49 cents for each transaction and they can't participate in their favorite forums.  Very unhappy campers out there.  Some are switching to Swap a DVD and Sawp a CD

I'm staying and don't get all the hype over the fees. Most likely the ones who are complaining don't trade or request that many books anyways. I have a Gold Key membership which will turn over to Standard membership on 2/15 and will last until my GK membership expires on 8/26. Then I will just pay the extra $8 than I normally do for GK to get the Standard membership again. I go here several times a day and can't imagine not doing that anymore, besides having the friends I have made here.

I think the hoopla is the people who aren't GK.  Poor me!  I can't afford the fee!  I have 50 credits want to buy them for only $2 each?  Can you tell I looked at CMT?  I don't want to pay an additional 49 cents for a book, I'll switch to Swap A DVD, a DVD is worth the 49 cents.

I don't have an issue with the fees. As a matter of fact, I forgot that I had renewed GK in Oct. So now that I already signed up for standard, I'm covered until Oct of 2016! Since I was already paying for GK, I find this to be no big deal. I'm staying! Like Connie, I'm on here so much and have made so many friends and contacts, that I wouldn't leave here for anything!

So the new Standard membership replaces Gold Key???  I must tell you that I NEVER go to "Club Member Thoughts" and have not for probably close to 3 years.  One time I voiced an opinion opposite to one of the frequent posters over there and she sent me vile PMs to the point I had to report them to the Administrators.  After that, I never went back.  Quite frankly I find it difficult to believe that if a person has the equipment (whatever it might be) phone, computer, tablet, etc. to use PBS, they probably have $20.  I suppose someone without any private way to access the internet could conceivably use a computer at a public library.  Perhaps we do have homeless or sub-poverty level users who would not have $20 so I should not be so harsh, but I look at $20 as a very nominal fee.  I realize I am very blessed and do not mean to be thoughtless of others.  I certainly gain much more than $1.66 per month pleasure from this site and would cut out something else in order to continue here.

Yes, Becky, the Standard Membership does replace the Gold Key in that Gold Key will no longer be offered after the 15th.

I've looked at some of the replies in Club Member Thoughts and I have to say that alot of the responses are pretty brutal.  I know it is just human nature to make knee-jerk decisions, but folks have a couple weeks to ask their questions and spend a little time thinking about the whole thing.  I think that if you don't use the club too much, it may not seem like something they want to pay money for.

Becky, yes it replaces Gold Key on 2/15 and you don't have to pay anything until you decide what plan you want when your GK expires. There is the added benefit of a wishlist of 500 with the Standard membership. If you have already have GK you will be able to start your 500 wishlist on 2/15.There is also the Limited Plan for $12.00 and the a la carte plan for no fee with limited benefits and a swap fee.

Jeanne, looks like I may take advantage of the $18 to join Standard Membership now, then I will be paid up until August of 2016. TY for that info. I decided not to renew before my GK runs out in August. Too much hoopla going on. If things are okay here by then, I will gladly renew.

Here is the link to all questions and answers in regards to the 3 plans, benefits and fees:

Don't know how to get the link to work here, so copy and paste it into url area.

Connie, those were quotes from CMT, not me. I'm staying!  I sure don't post anything there.  I'm not a good tour guide because technically I'm supposed to be over there helping and guiding.  Only like Becky I disagreed with something and phew did I get slammed.  I came close to quitting over that.  It was before I found all my friends here.  There were a couple crying poor, I'm a student with a part time job among other things.  Then how do you afford the postage to send books and enough that they have 10 credits or 50 credits.  Lots of credits being sold in the Book Bazaar.

We have our own version of CMT right here.  cheeky

I, too, am amazed that they haven't done this before.  Have never figured out how it could work when it was all free.  I went ahead and enrolled even tho my GK membership doesn't expire until May.  If I am reading the info right, that means my new membership will not expire until May 2016.  Don't really need a 500 book WL, but would miss "talking" to all of you!

Have been reading some of the comments in CMT and I agree that maybe the two-weeks notice was a bit abrupt.  I guess everyone has to decide what their priorities are.  I am just hoping that it will not mean the demise of PBS...I can see that it might discourage new members.

Geri...I can only hope that the nasty hospice lady is someday in your position.  Hospice is meant to make things easier for both patient and family.  Doesn't she understand that you are already going through a very emotional  and disturbing time...she is supposed to helping you through it, not making it more difficult for you.  OK...will get off my soapbox!! cheeky ... Well, I can certainly see that some people don't want to or can't afford the membership fees. Maybe they didn't use the site that much and/or don't think it's worth the fee or just don't want to pay for it. When you get something for free, so to speak, I guess it upsets some people to one day have to pay.

However, I think there have been some harsh and uncalled for comments on CMT to the people who decided to leave and explained why they were doing so. If we're allowed to express why we're staying, others should be allowed to express why they're going without being made to feel bad about it.  We all have our priorities and have to decide what's best for us.

I have the Gold Key and will stay until that at least runs out. I'm not going to renew for another year until I see how this shakes out. Don't want to pay for something that may not be here next year, although I think that's unlikely. I love this site and I don't mind paying the small amount to keep it going. I do think it could have been handled a little better, though.

I am so sorry about that Geri, I deleted that part from my post. Glad your mom is home and happy, sorry you have to deal with hostile hospice lady. That is not they way they usually do things.

Richard has posted over at the CMT in both threads about those who are leaving and those staying. Someone even posted that they contacted their Attorney General's office this morning accusing PBS of fraud. Geez, this is really getting out of hand.

I can see there is a mass of people using up their credits as I have had 38 book requests today already. surprise Never had that many in one day  before and no I am not complaining but it is sad.

I just checked the Bazaar and there are people asking others to go down to $1.50/1.75 to sell them credits. That is just not right. You won't find me doing that nor will I be asking anyone to come and spend their credits on my shelf. I am just sitting here and it is happening.

No problem Connie.  I looked at it and thought well what I wrote seemed like I was saying those things.  No, not leaving, in fact as soon as I read the email I clicked on the pre order button.  It amazes me that so many people are complaining, maybe it's the short notice, but since the day I joined PBS has said the day may come when we have to have a fee.  I'd love to know what the attorney general will say especially since PBS has had that disclaimer for years.  We're the lucky ones who have had no fee (except gold key) for a long time.  My gold key expires in September.

I was amazed to see people selling their credit for $2 and less.  I wonder if they're aware of how much they're worth.  I say that because at one time I didn't know how much a credit was worth.  Duh on my part at the time.

This whole membership thing to me is an example of how a "mob" mentality takes over in the physical world.  The Attorney General???? Oh my goodness.  Perhaps a two-week notice is less than perfect, but people sometimes get two-week notices when they lose their jobs!!!!  I hope the site is able to continue in existence and I have taken the "risk" of giving them my $18 today.  I would venture to guess that there are those complaining who spend that much money on Coca Cola, potato chips, scratch tickets, cigarettes, beer, Snickers bars, etc. in the course of 12 months.  Just happy to hear my pals here are staying around.  You all are the main reason I visit this site --- hopefully if it ceases to exist in a moment's notice we will still be able to have our chats and such via e-mail or phone!!!!  To that point, if anyone would like to be included in an e-mail group in case of disaster, send me your e-mail address in a PM and I will put together a list and disseminate to interested parties.

Back to books, I am reading one of the Jade del Cameron books by Suzanne Arruda --- has "Cheetah" in the title.  Think it fits into the Mystery Challenge in one or two categories.

I'm staying.  No hesitation--have gold key, but still went for the standard.  Might as well save $2 now.wink

Just finished Frozen Stiff by Annelise Ryan.  I dearly love her books.  They seem to have the right amount of humor (something always has me laughing out loud) and suspense.  I will say, however, I did figure out the guilty person a bit early this time.  Still was a very good read.

I agree, Becky.  Lattes are my "drug of choice", but would gladly give up 4-5 of them to stay on PBS! laugh ... Shift+R improves the quality of this image. CTRL+F5 reloads the whole page.

Read Silent Witness/Michael Norman.  This is the second and, I think, the last in his series featuring a detective with the Dept. of Corrections in Utah.  He works closely with a SLC homicide detective (female) who is also his girlfriend.  It was written in 2008 and he has started another series, so this may be all in this series.  While the "mystery" was cleared up, I would like to know what happens to the MC...that was left open-ended.

Give up 10 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to stay on PBS?  My hips would thank me!  wink

I'm reading the Ghost and Mrs Mewer / Krista Davis.  I swear she's getting paid by the word since I can't tell you how many times the sames things have been written to the point where when the sentence begins I'm skimming!  I like the book and the characters it's just a bit repetitious about unimportant things.  Plus every time she eats you get to share the food with her and her dog and cat.  If I ate as much as MC does I'd have to be on Biggest Loser.  And dang, the recipes are in the back!  devil

I was expecting an Amazon shipment yesterday and today got a shipment delayed message,  UPS will deliver as soon as possible.  Weather related, really.  Hee-hee, we didn't get our street plowed for a while, my cousin who lives three miles north was plowed the night before and of course it continued to snow.  My snow person came at 10 yesterday and with his trusty truck two swoops in the drive and a wave good bye.  A foot and a half of snow and a four foot drift by the front porch.

I check my e-mail so seldom I had no idea what you all were talking about until I went and read the email. I also am not surprised at all by this and am amazed it has taken this long. I am not sure yet what I'm going to do. I will stay a member, but just not sure at what level. My actual book trading has gone WAY down over the past year and a half or so, as I've striven to keep my TBR piles low. I don't even have a 'bookshelf' anymore...basically I just post books when I'm done reading them...if they are wishlisted, great...I send them along. If they aren't wishlisted, I remove them from my bookshelf and throw them in the bag for the second-hand shop so I don't have to deal with requests at a later date, as I generally only check in here a couple times a week. My wishlist is quite small, so the 500 wishlist or even 200 is really overkill for me...I think there's about 75 on there now, and many of those are for different versions of the same books. I just checked my transaction archive and I've only received 22 books in this past year, and sent 4. I still have about 100 credits, and that's after donating at least twice that many in the various credit donation things they've had going on over the years.

I do always use the printed postage when I send books, so maybe I will just do that to get free swaps rather than paying a fee each time...of course, it looks like that means I could no longer post in the forums...on one hand, that makes me sad. On the other, this is the only forum I read or post to anymore and it's only been maybe 1-2x/month on a good month of late. So....not sure yet! I am glad in a way that I'm not active on the forums anymore so have missed all the drama and flouncing about. cool

On to mysteries...I just finished The Baklava Club by Jason Goodwin, the print version, the most recent Yashim the Eunuch historical mystery, which I enjoyed, and am reading The Crazy School by Cornelia Read on my Kindle...that is #2 Madeline Dare mystery. Pretty good so far, I really loved the first in that series.

Geri, I am sorry to hear about your Mom...it's a difficult thing to go through. I hope that things will get worked out with her home care/hospice providers...nobody needs that sort of stress on top of everything else!

Cheryl, I'm amazed, today I've called them three times, gotten on a first name basis with the operator and the nurse.  Completely different attitude from the hospital person.I only dealt with one.  We got new oxygen concentrators yesterday and the deliver person said that they have more than one person complain about her.  I guess theý're just not complaining to the right person.

I not sure about this they say you can't post in the forums but, I wonder if it means all forums or those that are marked Club Members Only like CMT and Games, PBS Local Chapters and Politics.

I found this if it makes sense to you cause I'm confused!!!

Standard Membership gives you access to two private Discussion Forums - one limited to Standard Members only, and the other for both Limited Members and Standard Members.

Limited Membership gives you access to one private Discussion Forum (accessible only to Standard and Limited Members).

I just wandered over to another book swap site I use and they have a post in the forum about PBS charging for memberships.  These folks aren't complaining, just saying they'll try it for a year, go with the $12 fee since it's $1 a month.  Many said they're telling their friends at PBS about that site,  You know I've never seen mention of another book swap site here and over there they mention a coupe of others I didn't know existed.

I just took advantage of the $18 pre signup for Standard Membership for myself, so am all paid up until end of August, 2016. smiley I also prepurchased the Limited Membership annual plan Gift Certificate for my son. I thought since I had PBS money in my account I might as well go ahead and do it. I feel good now. smiley

Am reading Feta Attraction by Susannah Hardy for the new to me author for cozy challenge. I like it so far.
