Discuss!

OBVIOUS WARNING:  Since these are discussion threads, you can be certain there will be spoilers galore.  Your best bet is to stay away from a discussion thread until you've read the chapters it pertains to!

I'm not exactly sure where this happens in the book because I'm listening to the audio version. But I'm fairly certain it happens early and within the first 11 chapters. Baby Henry dies. Any thoughts on the cause of death? Symptoms were described as swollen hands and feet, and the baby sounded cholic-y.

I was wondering that myself, especially as Mama talked about other babies having the same problem.

Good question, and I too was wondering that.  If I have time I'll check out Web MD or something and see if I can find some possible causes of swollen extremities in babies.  Most likely some sort of condition that is easily treatable nowdays.

I got through Chapter 14, I think, last night.  Wow!  So much going on. I can't recall exactly what has happened at the end of Chapter 13 and what happens in Chapter 14, so I'll keep my mouth shut for now.  Be back to discuss this evening or tomorrow when I've had a chance to check the book.  I don't want to give anything away.

I had a thought about Baby Henry's condition, and I'm not at all sure if I'm close to being right. But I wonder if he had a kidney disorder or disease. Swollen joints, which would appear prominently in the hands and feet, would be symptomatic. Also possible, would have been some kind of systemic infection.

I'm on Chapter 35, but the author has still not told us exactly what was going on with Marshal and the tutor.  I suspect at some point we will get the full story.

@Shelley, I don't recall it ever being explicitly stated. This author encourages us to fill in the blanks.

i'm through chapter 11 now, liking it.  pretty smart of mama to just reduce Martha's drops slowly and wean her off of them...
